So I come home from the auction where I did pick up 2 pipes and jumped on E bay and found this. It scared the hell out of me.

It should never burn through....
Seriously... as a historical curiosity it is interesting.

But, if you intend to keep it I (personally) wouldn't smoke it.

And, I would put it into a display case that is sealed. (Look but don't touch.)

Otherwise... IMHO get rid of it.

Asbestos was probably used in the pipe because it is an outstanding thermal insulator. Abspestos pads etc. are routinely used in the lab for that purpose. Ideafly the pipe would never get hot. When the pipe was made the dangers of asbestos was unknown. Seems irresponsible to sell the pipe on eBay as a to be smoked pipe, since these dangers are now understood.

In the original thread posting about this pipe http://pipesmagazine.com/forums/topic/dont-think-id-smoke-this-pipe
the seller on ebay said,
"Vintage, lightly smoked estate asbestos pipe. Stamped Real Asbestos Patent no. 19963. Band is stamped EP WKC (I think). I never knew they even made asbestos pipes (instant lung cancer) From the 50s or earlier.. The patent date is 1858, which predates the American Civil War. I have seen a few vintage ads for these pipes which looked like cigars . This is the only actual one I have seen, although I have sold several thousand vintage pipes . The pipe is just over 6 inches long from bottom of bowl to end of bit. Bowl chamber diameter is just over 3/4 inch and bowl depth is just under 1 5/8 inch. Light caking in bowl. Negligible tooth wear on end of bit. Metal is slightly tarnished with age. Normal wear and tear (dings, oxidation and scratches) for an estate pipe. Nice overall shape and condition. Note - sold for display only."
Last sentence he tells you not to smoke it. I don't think you need to actually tell anyone not to smoke out of this thing. It's like telling people you need to put on a seatbelt.

That thing should be destroyed, I wouldnt want to sell it on ebay myself, god forbid someone bought it and smoked it, other than the legal realities this could bring down, I wouldnt want someone to buy it just for reasons of conscious

That would assume common sense and we know how rare that is :puffy:

As tired as I am right now, the asbestos pipe made my brain hurt. Now, granted, when the thing was manufactured I'm certain there was a lack of knowledge concerning asbestos. Having been around the stuff, however, I just can't see how that would make for an appealing pipe. I'd just assume smoke a pipe made of petrified dog crap.
