I tinker with various home blends, but my favorite so far is my "Black English", which is 25% Sutliff's Virginia Slices, 25% Sutliff's Stoved Virginia, 25% Stokkebye's 310 Black Latakia, and 25% blending Smyrna from PipesandCigars. I do really like it, but I'm not entirely happy with the Smyrna.
Does anyone have any thoughts on a really great blending Oriental/Turkish tobacco?
Thanks!

Izmir Turkish is still offered by C&D, now on sale at SP for a good discount, definitely a good leaf at a good buy, for mixing or smoking straight up. Most pipe smokers might want this as a condiment to go with other single leaf or to pep up a blend.

I mix C&D's Izmir Turkish with C&D's white burley, now and then. Very nice smoke, in my opinion.

One of the whole leaf distributors had a oriental taster packs, with 8oz each of prelip, katerini, izmir, basma and more but I can't remember the other leaves right now. I have been using them to make different blends...
Do you know who offered this... and if it's still for sale?

I am very fond of Basma for adding to blends. It has a much creamier palate and spice akin to latte / cinnamon / bready notes, as opposed to Izmir's dry, tart, more acidic presentation and its notes of white pepper / tannin / cedar. Definitely find a sampler or a variety pack to dial in your own tastes if you can, oriental leaf is wonderful.

Sounds perfect. Where can one find straight basma?

Doesn't seem that anyone is tinning it currently. Search "whole leaf tobacco" and you can buy it by the pound--which, for blending into pipe tobacco, should last you several years at a heavy consumption rate.
