hi guys,
Just wondering what type of jars are best for tobacco storage? Kilner screw on jars or the ones with the large orange seal and a clip?
Thanks

In my experience the screw Kilner's are better than the clip seal. The rubber the seals are made of on the clip jars perishes quite quickly. You can get silicone seals for those jars as replacements but they are quite dear and why bother when the original screw top Kilner jars work better in the first place.
Edit: When I refer to the screw top jars I mean like a mason jar. The type that has a lid that then has a screw collar that goes over the top and then puts pressure on the lid. This design is bullet proof as far as I am concerned and as good a seal as you will get.

The best jars by far for storing tobacco are Mason jars. Either the Ball or Kerr brand. Cheap and easy to find.

Thanks guys. the only thing that confuses me is the warning on usage of lids - it says it can only be used once!??

Extra lids are plentiful and cheap. I've reused lids many times though for stuff I smoke regularly. I just inspect the seal and wipe of any bits of tobacco, and make sure it's in good shape with no scratches or dents. If the seal is nice and clean I couldn't see reusing lids being much of a problem.

Yeah, Brian Levine revealed HIS obsessive compulsive need (Tuesday's podcast) to replace all his lids after one use, and often the jar!

He admitted that it was because he didn't want to wash them.

Just because you bring a box of jars home from the store, wrapped in plastic, doesn't make them 'pristine', or whatever condition he's so concerned about with his jars and lids. (sterile?)

I have a few jars. Most of them are peanut butter (Smucker's Natural) jars or regular Mason. I'm not cellaring anything for more than a year, at my age and condition.

The warning you're referring to is only meant when you use the lids for canning. When the lids are simply used to store tobacco they last for a very long time no matter how much you open and close the jar with no worry. If by chance you feel that the lid has become damaged in any way, and or lost it's integrity to properly seal it's always a good idea to purchase a box of lids (12 to a box) as they are quite cheap.

This is more important than it seems. For many of us, pipe smoking is a joy that fits into a full life, not a purpose in itself. Practicality (incl. convenience) is vital.
