The answer lies in the grain my friend. And only you can decide that. If you like the look of the grain (and I definitely do) I would spend the time sanding it, because it will pay dividends. If however, you are not keen on the grain or there are slight imperfections in it, then rusticate it. What ever you choose will be the right decision if you stick to the one basic decider 'The Grain'. Don't forget, the first time you use a chisel to start rusticating it, there is no going back.

when i stared this pipe i had full intentions on the rustic look in black. but then the grain showed up. no need to rush i guess. i think i will sand it down and restain and polish. i can always make another one. thanks excav8tor.

Step 1: Get better beer.
Edited to add: "unless you're going for a quantity over quality thing, then that's okay."

From my point of view, the grain is looking very nice....I would definitely lean away from rustication.... 8O

that is a far to nice looking piece of briar to be fiddling with it as if you could some how improve it.
I could see sandblasting it, but I doubt I would be able to take a chisel to that nice looking piece of briar. The grain is very interesting indeed.
