Tomorrow morning I'm driving up to Oakland for the Holiday and have been mulling over what pipes to pack along. I'm leaning toward smaller bowls as they will be easier to pack in a pocket. I have a cased set of Barlings that are nose warmers, perfect for a coat pocket. Perhaps a Ligne Bretange, a couple of Barling "L" sized pots and billiards. Nothing over 5" in length.
When you are on the road, do you have any rules regarding what you will take along?

I typically don't take pipes on the road ... I find them awkward to pack/carry and awkward to smoke in the car. We'll be heading out to one of our sons home where I'll be the only pipe smoker but my boy and his father-in-law will each smoke a cigar ... I probably WILL take one of my smaller pipes and a bowl or two worth of tobacco just in case, I'm going to take a few cigars, including one I'll select for my son's father-in-law. My boy has his own cigars, since his taste is different than mine.
But, I recognize that's just me ...

I have a bag that will hold about 10 pipes, a bundle of cleaners, 3-4 small packs of matches, and 4 half pint jars of tobacco that I take on the road with me. I carry on my person, a two pipe/ tobacco combination pouch that also holds half a bundle of cleaners, my tamper and matches. I never worry about the size of pipes I take with me.

I'm taking 3 briars - the Jobey, the Stanwell, and the Viking Classic - and some tobacco for each. Lancer Slices for the Jobey, Escudo for the Stanwell, and a bunch of Lane's 1Q (B&M calls it "Victorian Standard") for the Viking Classic. The Maxpedition pouch is working nicely - I can actually carry all 3 pipes, a Czech tool, my Brigham tamper, two lighters, some matchbooks, and a couple of pouches of tobacco. The 1Q is in its own jar, though - I like to have plenty on hand. :D

I thought I'd address this question after the fact. So here's what I took to my wife's cousins for Thanksgiving. Again I turned to my little old Mertonian Supreme lovat, (it's a nice travel size), some virginia flake mixed with my standby Plumcake, a Savinelli lighter, my old pewter flask with a little scotch, and one of my crummy old cameras I seem to be so fond of, loaded with Ilford HP5. Even though it was quite cold, it was nice to sit on their porch in the sun, smoke my pipe and watch the squirrels in the woods. Now I'm suffering the results of eating too much deep fried turkey, and pecan pie, but I'm still able to work the keys on my laptop.

Hope everyone had a good day, and was safe in their travels.
