I'm pretty new to pipe smoking and just received my new pipe in the mail today, It's a Peterson St. Patrick 2013 XL90. My local B+M has a lot of loose tobacco and I've tried a few blends that I really enjoy. With this pipe don't ask me why but I would like to try something out of a tin to break it in. So my question is what to get? I seem to be drawn to straight Virginia or Virginia with Perique blends. So if you have a suggested tin let me know.
Thanks in advance

I would suggest grabbing a tin of Escudo or Dunhill Flake, both should be readily available and both are very tasty. The Escudo is a Virginia/Perique and the Dunhill a straight Virginia.

I tend to enjoy breaking my pipes with a non-aromatic burley heavy blend. For me this is normally Carter Hall by itself or with some extra VA thrown in. I'm sure someone can suggest a nice tin of something. I always avoid perique and latakia when I'm breaking in a pipe because they can ghost so strongly.

I would also recommend Escudo, unless Harris has scooped up all the tins in the infamous "Escudo Scare of 2013!!!!"

I suggest you smoke what you like.

In the long run; I believe your choice of tobacco to be a moot point, unless you are going to dedicate the pipe.

Just smoke it, and enjoy your new pipe.

+1 Lawrence.

Just my opinion, I am not the experts that others are here.

I would ask the local guy that sold it to you & let you sample/sniff try what he has to offer.

I don't understand why you want to try tinned baccy, as long as you don't buy some goopy stuff, but that can be tinned also. You have a human that owns the B&M right there, so value his knowledge as much or more than your friends on the internet but value thier knowledge also.

And only in my opinion, your Pete will take a little bit of time before he/she breaks in and you will know it right away.

Thank you all for the advice, I think I might have to smoke a bowl while I ponder all the options that I have.

lockdown, I would recommend Virginia for pipe break-in. It burns evenly and fairly hot, and doesn't usually

have a lot of moisture, and doesn't ghost a pipe or leave any goop. So if you like Virginia, you're set.

Possibilities that come to mind are Orlik's Golden Sliced, Cup O Joes #5 sliced, or McClellands Red Cake

Virginia. But any Virginia you like will be fine, or any of the ones other Forums members have named.

Your liking of Va makes it the perfect break-in tobacco. As Lawrence says, smoke what you like. You're

not doing this for the pipe!

Ditto what Lawrence said. I don't dedicate certain pipes to specific tobaccos but I do dedicate certain pipes to TYPES of tobaccos. I really like Englishes in certain pipes and VaPers in others.
FYI. If you like VaPers and your order anything from 4Noggins (sponsor on the left) try out his Prairie Wind blend. It tastes like it's topped with something sweetish, but it's a really nice and "cool" VaPer.
Show us your Peterson. Pics or it didn't happen!

I've decided to go with the Escudo to break in the Peterson. I did pick up a tin after work today and can't believe what I paid for it, I will be ordering some online tonight. Jah I'm working on pics.
