One thing that has amazed me since I started smoking a pipe is the assortment of odd things I have next to my pipe supplies that i use to tamper and pack the tobacco in my pipe.My two most used are 1)Three inch long bolt with a flat round head. 2)Three inch empty shell cartridge from WW11.I was wondering what others use to pack there pipe?

I cut about 3 inches off of the tip of a whitetail deer antler, fitted a 45 acp case to it and gave it a nice polish job! Works great and looks good.

I have carved 4 different tampers, several "pipe nails", a classic pipe tool (which I have never used) each has a different use.

I have one I made of ebony for "racing" it has a small tamping area and a dottle digger.

The other three are of various diameters for use dependent on the diameter of the bowl I am smoking. I occasionally use my index finger for a light tamping; been doing that for years.

I also have one made of deer antler that I keep in my ashtray for regular use. The dottle digger end is curved very nicely and is perfect for clearing a blocked draft hole or digging the dottle.
Here are some of them:
