This is a filter that came with a Peterson System pipe that I bought secondhand as an estate pipe. I need to clean the pipe and want to remove this first. It feels like some sort of stone.

Looks like a Nording keystone.
They're supposed to be placed at the bottom of the bowl to absorb moisture and keep tobacco dry.
That one must have been sucked up ! I can't imagine it being placed there deliberately. But then again, strange things happen ?

The Nording keystones I have are clay & very soft.
This looks like someone stuffed a rock in there, maybe someone's kid playing with it. You could try needle nose pliars and hopefully it will come out easy.
