Hiya guys,

Hate to bother all you old hands but..b4 I go out and pay for it I just have to ask...I am thinking about buying one of those "Vintage" green glass, wooden lid humidors, it will be accompanying a wooden pipe rack of course, what I need to know is, is that a proper, economical, ..smart? way to store/keep my tobacco? I am just beginning pipe smokin', so, don't smoke all that much yet, tongue is kinda raw right now....sigh. Anyhoo, thanks ahead of time for any help in this matter?
P.S. What do ya'll use? :puffy:
Thanks,

Blue

The cheapest/easiest/most efficient way would be to get glass mason jars from wallmart. Rinse them out and let them dry. Put your tobacco in but leave about two fingers worth of room at the top of the jar to help aging. Then put your baccy in, sit the jars in hot water *make sure the water doesn't get into the jar* then put the lids on and let them cool, when cooled the kids should have sealed themselves from the temp change. Now if your not aging just throw them in the jar and they should be fine :)

LMAO, ok, ok, you got me, that was very good. I know what Mason jars are, I can do that...was kinda hopin' for something a little more...cool? Neat? Fun? Since I am starting a new hobby, was kinda getting a little area in the garage(ManCave if you will)all set up so me and a friend or two could sit there and watch TV, was hopin' for a humidor that looked good but, was affordable...Mason jar huh? (definitely affordable I reckon)ok, maybe I can find an unusual looking jar to the same effect, thanks for the help darjones :worship:
Edit: 20 seconds after I posted this...I see your photo...Holy Smoley, well, I can certainly understand why you would use Mason Jars, yes indeed. At this point in time an ounce lasts me a looong time, you have enough there to last me ...forever! lol..dang! 8O You are definitely the man with the tobacco! Ty again for the advice.

If you want somethig neat B&Ms keep there tobacco in those big glass jars with a rubber seal on them. I think they look neat but never have 2lbs of any baccy I need stored lol you can buy those jars online but good luck finding out what there called :/ I know your local B&M can order them for you though.

If you're talking about a jar that sits in the center of a pipe rack. The lid should have a plastic ring that acts as a seal to keep the tobacco from drying out. Those are good to keep a blend in for a while as you smoke it.If you're talking about storing tobacco for some time go with the mason jars.

Thanks Puffy, that is what I was looking at,... and u2 Darjones..again, lol. I will thank you anyway. I have what I needed to know now, *smacks forehead* "DOH", should have thought of it myself, but kinda had tunnel vision in this matter, like..I am already looking at all the pipe sites advertised here in the left column and I am thinking..."hmmm, what if just bought 2 of these pipes that are on sale...and maybe just one lighter,...oh, and that stand looks really cool"...my wife is really gonna be...mad...

I know what you mean I enjoy the readesrch almost as much as the smokin itself! If your just looking for cool man cave ideals I know there is a company that makes pipe specific cabnets with glass doors and spots for your pipes to be displayed. I also know any cabnet that you can drill holes in can become a very pretty pipe rack *thats what I did* of course you might want to get a few blends and pipes before you start dedicating a room to the hobby :p

Blue, welcome to the world of piping.
As noted, if you want to store tobacco, mason jars are the best way to go for opened containers. If the original container is not opened, just leave it sealed until you are ready to try it. After opening, I like to move it to mason jars, whether for longer cellaring or even for shorter time rotation. My preference it to put it into wide mouth pint jars, if it fills the jar, or into 8 oz (half pint), or 4 oz. jars as desired, always using the wide mouth styles. My usual practice is to use the pint, then breaking that down into smaller sizes as needed, always smoking out of the smallest size.
As noted, no need to wash new jars, but do wash and dry used jars before reusing same.
Humidors are OK for a single blend that you smoke regularly, but I still fall back to the smaller mason jars for rotation of multiple blends.
Enjoy the variations!

Do you people really not clean your jars before long time storing? Whenever I'm investing 5-10 years of time I go all out and take the 5 minutes to wash the jars even when new lol

I have two pipe racks with humidor jars. I keep Stokkebye Blank Dansk in one and a B&M mixture in the other. The rest is in mason jars.

Everyone has a couple old tobacco jars in the center of a pipe rack. I put some cool briers in the

rack and then stuff the jar with cobs.... "I like the look".

I use latching lid time glass gars with the silicone seal, they work great, I use the the shorter really wide top ones so I can just get my hand in there and grap the tobacco with ease.

I'd be careful storing your tobacco in the garage. I've heard several times to try to keep a constant temp. Basement might work better. My basement is too warm, I keep my jars and tins in a wooden footlocker in my closet, seems to be the best place in the apt for it. It's a cool, dark place.
I used to keep my jars out in the living room, the only problem being that the sun heats up that room in the afternoon. I think I ruined several samplers of tobacco that way, but I still can't bring myself to throw it out. That, and I didn't know the mason jar trick. The things you learn by trial and error... wish I woulda found this site sooner.
So, anyway, unless your garage generally stays the same temp all year round, I'd find a different spot to store your tobacco

Wow, more great advice comin' in, I just want to thank all of you who answered my call, amazing response, definitely the best Forum, of any kind, I have ever been in! 8) I have pretty much settled on the glass and/or acrylic container with latching lid with silicone seal for keeping my "immediate use" tobacco, and will use Mason jars for longer storage, ...if I ever get to that stage...right now an ounce lasts me almost a month, of course, this is only my 2nd ounce, it may grow as I get more pipes, I have one pipe, have one more in transit to me.

 I am getting very interested now to see where I will be in 365 days from now, I am going to start taking pics and keep a little written and photo journal just to see what the difference will be

I'm quite sure that someone posted a link regarding mason jars straight from the factory. It turns out that it is better to use the jars as they come in; washing them out created more bacteria than leaving them as they are.
Just repeating the info

I always buy tobacco in tins so have no problems in storing.
One question for you jar guys: Ok, you bought bulk, put it in a jar and wait for aging. Let's assume you have a pound in one jar. What happens when you want to smoke it? You open it, breaking the sealing, and what? You should smoke all this pound quickly?
