So I'm about a month in to my pipe smoking journey and am having a good time and learning a lot. I have learned that I am a fan of the fruity aromatics, not so much the mapley, chocolatey ones. My issue is the non-aromatics. I thought Black Frigate was a bit too much like a cigarette or cigar, plum pudding was better but seemed to lack anything that wowed me. I just tried Bengal Slices and really liked it. It has a spicy quality and a tickle on the tongue that's nice. All of these are blends, so I don't know what parts of the taste that I am liking.

Can anyone guide me where to go next?

I hope my tobacco critique made sense. I'm new at this and my palette is still maturing.

Well, there's fruity and then there's tangy and then there's sweet and then there's sour and then there's...

Which aromatics are you liking?

I think I just like strong flavors. As far as aromatics, I have tried C&D chocolate, Cult BRM, Captain Black cherry and grape and some no name caramelly type. Embarrassingly enough, I keep going back to the Captain Black cherry and grape.

Maybe it’s the Latakia that’s not really agreeing with you? Id recommend you try a pouch of the Amphora Kentucky Blend, or maybe Capstan Blue. I get a really nice savory Flavour from both of those blends and you might find it a nice change.

You’re still early. So many styles and blends to try. You might want to get a sample of burley blends, Oriental, Virginias, VaPers, etc. A good list of blend types to peruse is in the advanced search page on tobaccoreviews.com.

In fact, here’s a fun link to browse, just to see the very tip of the iceberg of what you might want to consider:

Current production blends rated “highly recommended” over more than 100 reviews.

And that misses an absolute ton of good new ones that don’t yet have 100 reviews.
