What Are You Drinking? July 2025

When Susan and I closed on our Pennsylvania house in August of 2020, it was on her birthday. We celebrated with the exquisite Japanese Blended Whisky, Hibiki 21. These were her tasting notes at the time (which were very accurate):



On June 27th, we closed on a new property and are celebrating tonight, again with Hibiki 21:



It’s still just as amazing.

After our drink (and some snacks), as part of the closing celebration, I plan on smoking Savinelli 145⁰ in a beautiful Savinelli Autograph Fan that a very dear friend recently gifted me. If not, I’ll smoke it in the morning.

Sister picked me up a case of Modelo after she got off work.

We discovered a forgotten mixed case of wine in our (uninsulated) garage a few weeks ago. It’s been there since our move to northern Indiana in 2016. Surprisingly none of the corks had dried out or popped, but obviously the heat/cold cycles of the seasons have been brutal (including weeks in the winter of a garage well below freezing, and weeks in the summer well above 80F).

Rather than just pour them all out, we’ve been opening the bottles and evaluating each one. Most have been long ruined, but tonight we’re having a 2013 Rosé of Pinot Noir from Sokol Blosser in Oregon that is actually drinkable, even bordering on pretty good!
