I really find winter solstice a downer, but I'm happy to say, here in the Northern Hemisphere, we've gained an hour of daylight since Christmas. What a pleasure to not have dusk until almost six o'clock p.m. along with earlier daylight, first light and dawn, in the morning. First light is when the sky lightens gradually before dawn, when the sun actually appears over the horizon, and is used frequently in the military, especially in the Navy. Correct me, Army guys, if it is equally familiar in that branch. Things are actually scheduled for first light, rendezvous with another ship, etc.

We used BMNT (begin morning nautical twilight), when the sun is 12 degrees below the Eastern horizon, and EENT (end evening nautical twilight) when the sun has dropped 12 degrees below the Western horizon. Pretty much the first and last bits of usable light before or after you use night vision devices.

No. It’s 0-Dark-30 in Army speak. We operate in darkness. Parachute jumps are in darkness just before dawn.

The sunrise is helpful, I suppose— for the assault through.

You didn't do Stand To at BMNT and EENT? The Army is big, different terms for different organizations I suppose.

Begin Morning
End Evening
Nautical Twilight

Just throwing some inter-service rivalry MSO’s way. I was 82nd Airborne, Jacob. —My whole family was Navy. MSO knows that. — I’m the black sheep, a bad spoke in an otherwise good wheel.

Pipesmoking is more fun in the dark.
As long as the temperature is above freezing your butane lighters still work so the best time of year is fall and spring.
Come June the bugs are infinitely more repressing than the cold, warm days in winter do exist, mosquitos never rest.

I am glad to hear it but did not even noticed....all I can see and thinking off is tons of snow everywhere since mid of december and constant freezing since about that time..Sunlight at deep freezing temperatures is so beautifull and strong...And sunsets over Tetons are just amazing ...I will take those white dry winters over hot humid summers with constant mold at the air all day long..Plus I can't even smoke my pipes during that time cause it just does not taste right..But In the winter like this smoking a pipe is so rewarding..Having a little heater in your hands and enjoying quiet white natural world around you
