I've managed to get my hands on a 16 oz tin of Westminster that is 3 years old. I understand Greg has talked about what happens once the tin is opened in that it disrupts the aging process. My question is how much do you all think?
I want to enjoy 3/4/5/6+ year old Westminster and figured I could divvy this up pretty well. Do you think the disruption is drastic if I open it and split it in to a handful of mason jars right away? Is it going to take another 6 months before the aging process starts back up? Am I nitpicking over nothing?
No wait, there is no nitpicking when it comes to Westminster...

To be honest thats exactly what I would do, I would fill the jar up run it under as hot as it goes tap water on the outside, than seal it...rinse and repeat.

It is gonna disrupt it,no doubt about it. If it was me, I'd wait until the 5 year mark, which, from everything I read, is when you first notice a difference. I would then set aside what I wanted to smoke then, and then jar the rest up for long term enjoyment. :puffy:

Buy a new tin and hide that one real good . GLP blends are great even when new but if you have already got three years in . Hell flip a coin . 8)

I agree with Igloo.... crack open a new tin and then you can imagine what the ageing tin will taste like in 5 yrs!!

Alright, storing till the 5 year mark and will divvy it up at that point.
I've also got a 2 ounce tin that will hit 5 years in a couple months and an 8 ounce that just hit 3 years. I've got the 8 opened and dividing that up into 3 batches - the first being for now :puffy:

Generally speaking, if you don't need to smoke it now, and you are interested in aging it, leave it alone in the tin! I never open a tin until I want to smoke it and then I do put it all into Mason Jars, simply with the lid screwed on tightly.
Below, Craig Tarler and I are preparing samples of the many popular C&D blends in the tent in Chicago. Captain Bob's Blend is in one of these tins!
