MOVED to General Discussion.

For reasons unconcerned with smoking, I am using Wellbutrin off-label.

Wellbutrin is used by many to quit smoking.

As of late, I have NO desire to smoke my pipe and find I must make myself do so. I guess it works, at least for me, but that is not why I am using it, LOL.

I am wondering if anyone else has stories about medications knocking out their desire to smoke?

Years ago when I was a cigarette smoker, my doctor prescribed Zyban, another brand of Wellbutrin, for me as an aid to quit. It had an effect in the beginning for sure but I was a determined smoker at the time and those effects eventually subsided as I continued to smoke while taking it.

I wonder why you would post this on a pipe smoker's forum.

Ah, duh. Did you read the initial thread? I am not advocating NOT SMOKING. The QUESTION is Are there any medications pipe smokers have taken that have impacted the desire to smoke?

It's a legitimate question.

Until the beginning of this year I did not take any type of medicine, now I take a pill to control hypertension. It hasn't reduced my desire to smoke.

I took Wellbutrin for a while, and found the same. I was a cigarette smoker at the time, and it cut me from a pack a day to maybe 3-4 cigs a day. But, it also came with the unwelcome side effect of random flashes of anger and intense anxiety. I thought it was just a nicotine w/d symptom, so I forced myself to down a few extra cigarettes. That did NOTHING to curb the swings, so I wound up having to get off the pills. Doc said it’s rare, but not unheard of.
Side note, it also caused vivid and rather unsettling dreams. What a tag team of “rare” effects.

I've the same experience with Wellbutrin. It helped get me off cigs more than 20 years ago and I now smoke the pipe or a cigar only when I want to and not because I crave it. I didn't have a smoke for months until yesterday evening's bowl of CA-100. It doesn't cure consumerism though as I'm still buying tobacco and pipes!

Caveat: I haven't used Wellbutrin save for a week-ish 14 years ago. It didn't agree with me.

What I will say, as someone who has an intimate relationship with the effects of, and how to deal with, my own anxiety and depression, is that many drugs or drastic changes in mental state can change my nicotine (and junk food) cravings.

Back when I was taking Venlaflaxine (effexor) it made me want to smoke 24/7. Other things have eliminated my desire to smoke, albeit temporarily.

I'm big into exercising, and find that when I'm doing a lot of running I have zero desire to drink or smoke. I also get a wicked runners high, if that means anything.

I believe it has to do with Dopaminergic, Nicotinic, and Serotonergic activity (or lack there of). Food, medications, exercise, emotions, and smoking all manipulate the aforementioned receptors or the substances that affect them.

My intuition is that Wellbutrin is known(intended) to affect those types of receptors which affect cravings/tobacco use.

So although I don't have anything directly addressing your initial topic, I believe that what you are experiencing is very normal.

Thanks. I am actually using it because my insurance didn’t pick up the cost of a different medication for weight loss. I put on 30 pounds during covid. The doctor realizes this medication won’t do the trick most likely and is using that data to make an argument that I really should qualify for the other. Of course I diet and exercise as well. I just was shocked at how well it quenches the smoking desire and got me to wonder if other medications have that effect as well.

I was just going to post nearly the same thing about Wellbutrin. It made me have uncontrollable anger at times. I did and said some regrettable things while I was on that medication so like you I got off those pills.

Wellbutrin tested my wife’s patience more than cheap bourbon and expensive hobbies, for sure. I’ve found over the years that the bourbon works better, anyways.

Yes, I tried that stuff when I was a teenager, it made cigarettes taste terrible, but it made me manic. I had to get off the stuff. If a medication has a side effect, I’m going to get at least one of those side effects, I’m very sensitive to medication.
