Quickly, anyone run into issues with a strange flavor from the pipe when smoking? I sweeten mine with salt and alcohol. But it seems no matter what I do I am getting a weird colongne type taste. Kinda like when you spray some colongne or after shave and a little gets on your lips or in your mouth. Maybe I'm crazy.

Remember to fully rest your pipe after cleaning with alcohol. I'd give it 4 or 5 days. If you're tasting residue, you are either cleaning too often, or not giving it enough dry time.

Ah ha...that makes sence. Ok I will let them dry longer. Incidently, how long should I leave alcohol and salt in bowl? I tend to go a day....longer?? or less?

I've had new pipes or restored pipes that tasted foul for a bit. I found smoking a couple bowls of Carter Hall, or SWR seemed to bring them right back in line. I suppose other 'simple' blends would work, but those two seem to work best for me.

+1 Dry time, smoke some good 'ol Burley blends to kick those

ghosts, and use a high-proof alcohol( I like Vodka or Grain) when doing a salt clean (24hrs,

should be fine)

Thank you, appreciate the feedback. Guess I need to smoke more....unusually strange comment for this day and age. I mostly collect and don't smoke much.

Hmm. What kind of pipe is it? Some pipes are dipped and will get some stain inside the bowl. After about 4 or 5 bowls it will burn off and the taste will be gone. Alcohol cleaning will help a little with that, but you really have to smoke it out.
Everyone's cleaning cycle is different, but After smoking I just run a cleaner or 2 through the stem and shank, swab out the bowl and let it rest 1 day for each bowl I've smoked that day. I only do what I call a "deep clean" with alcohol every couple of months, because I rotate and only smoke 1-2 bowls a day.
I can smell when they are sour as opposed to sweet so I go more by that than actual time.

I wouldn't do the salt and alcohol treatment regularily. Maybe I'm crazy but I get the impression that you do it often?
A simple cleaning after every smoke with 1 alcohol soaked pipe cleaner is what works for me. Only been smoking for a year but none of my pipes have needed a S&A treatment as of yet.

I wouldn't run an alochol cleaner tru the stem or pipe after each smoke,, just a dry cleaner is all it needs. As for alochol treatment, you do not need several days for it to dry out as the alochol is an evaporative. Over night (12 hours) is plenty.
