I finally bought the Savinelli Cutter I have wanted. It came in a large box with no internal packing material. I extracted the box from some bubble wrap and it popped open, dropping the pipe on the table, and scratching it. The corners of the box opened at an odd angle, all by themselves. Savinelli makes some great pipes, but their idea of packaging is not adequate to the fundamental purpose of keeping the pipe safe. Additionally, the pipe had a magnetic stand which bounced around in the box, scratching the pipe further. The vendor, smokingpipes, has offered a full refund, which is appreciated, but I wanted that pipe.

That's a damn shame about your Sav. I just got a Sav churchwarden from Smoking pipes and it came in a box full of the air-filled plastic bags with the smaller box the pipe came in suspended wonderfully in the middle. Good to hear about the refund, but surprised to hear about the box, as smokingpipes has a good reputation with protecting their pipes very well during the shipping process.

Thanks Roth, but none of those gave good enough pictures to order online. I sent it back today and ordered a different shape. We can't blame Smokingpipes, the packaging flaw was Savinelli's. What kind of idiot designs a box that opens secretly at the corners, without warning. With that kind of box they should have attached a parachute.

Sorry to hear it - but glad smokingpipes is taking it back (they have a generous return policy on burn outs too). Few things in the pipe game are worse than buying and waiting to receive a coveted pipe, only to have it damaged.

foggy, sorry to hear you have to send back the pipe you wanted. It is amazing at how some people will ship expensive and rare items, you have to wonder what goes through their minds when they do this.

That's too bad Foggy, but glad smokingpipes is taking care of you. I hate it when I receive pipes with the stem attached, you are fortunate that didn't break in the fall. That sure seems like an odd way to ship a pipe, hopefully Smokingpipes passes on these results to avoid future occurrences.

What a shame :(.
I've been really lucky when ordering pipes. Sometimes they come almost too well wrapped and packaged, it's like opening the secret tomb of the pharaohs.
