The seller has listed it as copper. Which it quite clearly isn't. It looks like it has just been spray-painted.
Well, the answer to your question has two parts... Yes it was a real thing, Dunhill made them in silver and gold. @Humblepipe sold a pair of them recently. But, that is not one of them, it's just a spray painted pipe.

I know Tom Eltang did Gold, Silver, and maybe even Bronze/Copper.

Spray paint: flavor enhanced if you like huffing paint but get too light headed. A choice score for the connoisseur of huffing.
Big difference in gold plated vs. gold painted. The latter is horrible, and the former holds no interest for me except the novelty of it.
Legit or not, I kind of view it as gilding the lily. Not necessary with a proper pipe.
