To soon in my book. And acrylic came to late. Hate those rubber bastids (Just me)...

The reason that I am asking is I have the chance at a 1890s pipe. The stem is vulcanite. I have been told that it is the original stem. To my knowledge vulcanite stems were not produced until the early 1900s. Anyone know?

I believe some companies were using Vulcanite stems around 1910ish but I'm no historian. I live for today. And a little bit for tomorrow. Sometimes I think about yesteryear. Either way, I'm glad we live in a time of indoor plumbing.

The patents for vulcanization (adding sulphur to harden natural rubber) were issued in 1845, so the OP's rubber stem may well be the original.

Is it a British pipe marque? British manufacturing firms were using vulcanite on industrial fittings by the late 1800s, I believe, so it's certainly possible.

I love ebonite and cumberland stems - prefer them with almost any pipe at all!
