So I bought a second tin of MacBaren Virgina flake..the first tin I bought was so very sweet..a delicious natural sweetness which I loved and wanted to get again. However this second tin, I detect no sweetness.? Could it be that the first tin was older? I did buy the first tin from a not to busy store. And the second I bought on line from a busy store. Could it be sweeter because it was perhaps older? Any thoughts?

Thanks

I love Mac Baren Virgina Flake. Over the course of 9 months, I have smoked 3 tins of it and it has always been sweet to me, and my tins were new, actually handed to me off the production line while visiting the Mac Baren factory last July.
However, I think I have heard that Virginia tobacco blends do become more rich in flavor with age, so you could be right.
There are lots of other variables, like what you ate or drank, and even the climate and season can have an effect. I think G. L. Pease will be addressing the latter two in his next column coming out May 1st.
Interestingly, after re-reading my review of Mac Baren Virginia Flake it seems I have had a better experience with this tobacco being fresh.

Yes, maybe its me. I've tried it a few different times now. However I do not know for sure which tin is older and which is newer. I have both tins but I don't know if there's a way to date them. Hopefully its just a spell and it will be sweet again because I loved it too. Ill give it another try to try to figure this out because my other tobaccos taste pretty much the same.

Thank you Kevin for your response. I'll try another bowl today. : )

I got some of this the other day and it was actually a bit unpleasantly "tangy." I was surprised because most reviews I've read say it's sweet. Is there something that causes tangy-ness, or is it probably just my particular taste buds disagreeing with the baccy? I smoked it in a newer briar pipe with minimal cake on a rainy fall evening in Southern Oregon. I don't know what other info would be helpful. :)

For some reason I have never tried this flake, and to be honest I don't know why. How does it stack up to the SG Best Brown or F&T Cut Virginia Plug or Dunhill Flake? I am always looking to add another flake to the rotation, is it worth buying?
