I tend to agree. When I first started pipe smoking (the first time I quit cigs...lol), I was a college student and couldn't afford to get another pipe for quite a while. The pipe I had wasn't a super cheap pipe, but it definitely wasn't anything spectacular either. It was a GBD that cost around $25-30. I smoked the hell out of that thing...all day long, however many bowls I felt like. Hell...I didn't ever even bother with pipe sweetener...it wasn't sour! I did use a ton of pipe cleaners, but I also tended to smoke aromatics and smoke 'em pretty fast.
You definitely don't NEED a bunch of pipes, but you eventually HAVE to give in to the PAD. :D

I have to say that I concur with a lot of what he says. I bought new pipes when I could afford to do so in my early life as a pipe smoker. And, I would "smoke the hell out of them" and they would do just fine. However, I do have one pipe that can only be smoked once or twice before it begins to go South on me. It then requires an extensive cleaning and a lengthy rest. I've posted about it before. It smokes very well once or twice before it goes sour. I've tried numerous different tobaccos, I've tried all of the suggestions that have been communicated to me, and none seem to fix the problem. Believe me, I would love to smoke that pipe for hours or days, but it simply won't permit it. It's my Peterson System Standard 307. Heck the bottom line may be that I got a bad pipe, but my first smoke in it is always excellent. I guess that's why I haven't given up on it.

I made the same comparison. In other videos, I kinda thought maybe a cross between Jim Gaffigan and Al Franken.
Never had a pipe go sour on me. I used to smoke the same one for days on end. Regular cleaning was all that it would get. Can't understand the problem pstlpkr has with the Peterson. I have several both system and regular pipes no problems.The only complaint I have is the P Lip stems don't seem to draw as well as the fishtails.

It tends to collect a lot of moisture. The stem is designed to be removed while it is being smoked.
I dump it multiple times during a smoke, but the briar stays damp and (I suppose) it imparts a very unpleasant taste during the second or third bowl.
Unless I let it dry completely before smoking it again.
Usually takes at least 3 or 4 days.
I like the P-lip, it's easy to hold.

Strange. I get some moisture in my Peterson Systems with the military bits but not a lot. Never had to rest one for several days. Maybe my taste buds are dead? LOL . Now you have me interested. I will have to do some research! What is the number on that pipe? All I can think is MAYBE the bowl size is making a difference.

Mine is virtually identical to your Peterson's pictured center bottom.
I like the pipe. Just can't smoke it as much as I would like.
I am considering, filling the well with Ezra Brooks and letting it sit for an hour or so.
There may be some bacteria or something in there that the alcohol can eliminate.
What are your thoughts?

Couldn't hurt! Give it a good scrub with a bent bristle cleaner as long as you have alcohol in it . The one center bottom is a 314 . That particular one was made between 1938 and 1941 or so.Marked Made In Erie. I would like to see that one go to a serious Peterson Collector.I'm just a happy smoker.
I'll have to think about soaking the well for that length of time.
And, I generally use a bristle cleaner as a matter of routine when I clean my pipes.
