I have a knack for finding some unique pipes. This one is stamped, "ECHT BRUYERE", or Genuine Briar in German. Not so much a branding then a declaration that the pipe is made of briar.

Has anyone seen this type of pipe before? What is the purpose of this design? Any ideas of its age. I'd hazard a guess of 1920s or earlier. However, that is just a guess. Thanks, gents.

Neither bowl looks very worn or well smoked. The upper bowl looks recently reamed. Perhaps Sandollars might be on to something. Not exactly the execution I would take for a briar constructed Calabash, but seems like the most reasonable theory at this point.

It's interesting, almost like an experiment but definitely intentionality made.

@7charb have you smoked it yet?

Not yet.

Have not smoked it yet. It's on the small side for me. This happens to me now and again... see a pipe that looks interesting, dimensions sound good enough... pipe arrives and is much smaller than I had imagined.

? That's the problem with the internet! Hate it when that happens!

I have seen one like this before.

The one I saw had a briar bottom chamber, like a regular pipe and a Meerschaum lined top bowl that pressure fit on the bottom portion. The theory was you could use the bottom pipe as one would normally use a pipe. And when you placed the one on top and used it for the tobacco, it produced a calabash-like effect in the bottom bowl, causing the smoke to be very cool and dry.

I can't remember where I saw it (sufferer from CRS disease :) ) but I thought it was on this forum.

Very trick design... puffy

I saw one of those at an antique show once. I took it apart. The bottom chamber had some sort of cotton ball in it that was stained with tobacco tar.
