The Zeppelin is a novelty, a sparkless pipe with it's roots in a now mothballed form of transportation. It is a short smoke, perhaps it's derided and billed as odd or even impractical, but i like it and think it is a practical pipe with its own place. This wont satiate the steroetypical pipe shape imagery, for those who can look past the stereotype its a gem of a pipe. For on the run or wanting just a small amount of a blend to scratch an itch. it's a good unit. It smokes cool and sweet.
The ash spill is almost non existant, there is no tamping. The cap does not retain heat, so it's pocketable after a few short puffs. Also, it does not emit much smell once out like a partially smoked conventional pipe. The Zeppelin requires and was designed for a filter, the manual states a new filter for each smoke.
There are some noticible drawbacks:
Only a very minimal amount of tobacco can be filled, this is the cigarillo of pipe chambers. I found relighting is frustrating on the last third of the chamber, necessitating turning of the pipe while lighting. Trying to get the chamber apart can be a pain. It will go out quickly because its always capped.
For historical posterity, obligatory mention of Earnst A. Lehmann whom smoked this style of pipe and was a Zeppelin captain.
All the best.
