I've noticed that not only do most lots on ebay look similar to one-another, but in almost every single one of them it wouldn't be that far of a stretch to believe every pipe in the lot to be by the same maker -- in fact it is sometimes found to be exactly so.
I've also noticed some of the member's here collections also have a very strong similarity between all the pipes. Now in all cases, most of this is that the classic reddish/brownish colour is by far the most common, as is some sort of straight or bent without much differentiation on that -- and then simple cobs and then simple meers come in line ---
What I suppose I'm getting at is, am I the only one who's pipe collection only makes sense as a colelctive? I mean if you took almost any random two of my pipes and called them of my collection without reference to the rest -- they'd likely be laughably mis-matched. Of course some of my pipes do match, but only small sections fit together and the over-all entropic order is what really makes the collection.
The classic matching sets (particularly those on ebay) just really . . .the kinda creep me out to be honest, for some inexplicable reason.
Iunno, thoughts, arguments?

I think the same applies to anything that is collected. Take classic/ muscle cars for example. Some want any and all under the sun and take pride in each car, where others only want a specific car just every year model of the same car. They are not interested in other brands or even different models of the same brand. And they can tell a you every subtle difference from year to year.
Me, I am still trying to figure out which style of pipe is for me so I have a small collection with not even 2 pipes made from the a same material.
Though a dos of the pink stuff before you look on eBay again may help.

As time goes by and the more pipes we buy . Sometimes we stumble on a excellent smoker . In hopes of the elusive euphoric smoke we often buy the same shape or brand .Some how thats how I ended up with rotations of Amphora , GBD , Nording and a few short sets to name a few . Other times the shape captures ones attention and we end up with sets of blasts ,freehands ,billards etc . Everyone is differant and sometimes the stem is what feels right and we go of into a quest for a certain style .And then just when you have it down your taste changes and have to match pipes to different types of tobacco . Heck what Iam trying to say is I have PAD . Good Day !

It's really a matter of opinion, some one might say my collection of iPods isn't really a collection because they are all pretty much the same thing but that is why I collect them!

Variety is the spice of life and I try to install that in my pipe collection.

That being said, I find I lean towards bent shapes. I think my next pipe will

be a bulldog or churchwarden. Don't have any of those yet.

Bubba yer just a tad weird though (irregardless of the context) How can that even be a word, if double negatives are bad what do you do with a word like 'irregardless' that -is- a double negative? -- anyways. . ..
Thanks for weighing in guys. I think I get the idea of, you just happen to find something you like and gravitate towards that. Hell I only own black button down shirts and simple jeans, and only have one pair of shoes. . . I get repetition due to love of an old standard heh heh.
Plus its a little more prevalent in the ebay 'lot' arena. But if we're going to talka bout oddities in ebay I would rather harp on the fact they call any used pipe an "antique" even when they're posting pipes that couldn't possibly be twice my age let alone proper antiques. But that's just marketing, the only annoyance is that it leaves you with a bunch of regular estate pipes (and there's always the chance you'll find one that is really nice in your opinion) when you're looking for a specific antique you've got your mind on heh heh. Like when I was looking for antique clays and eventually just gave up.
Still, I do find it interesting that much of my collection building has been "Ohh I don't have anything like that yet" rather than "Well I have something similar I really like." Indeed I find it interesting because pipes are the -only- thing I've ever collected in such a manner, I've always been a gravitater (new word!). Hell that's the real reason I have those bloody Ukranian pipes, becuase at the price you kinda expect they're going to be bad (especially knowing they aren't briar) I just couldn't resist having that part of the world covered.
On the other hand there are some things I wouldn't touch with a ten foot pole (unfortunately most meerschaum designs fall into that category, which is unfortunate because I'd really like to have a meer, but I cannot find one I like)

hrm... I like trying to obtain older Dr Grabows before those with money come sliding in and outbid me. LOL

I like Wellingtons too.

The rest of my collection is... a pipe that struck me just right at a moment when I could do something about it. *chuckles*
