I’ve been getting a few guys at work into pipes here lately. One is a nail smoker, one is a cigar guy, and the other is a vape “smoker”. He is also a former nail smoker, and occasionally smokes a cigar. I gave him several samples to try, and all the pointers I could think of. The samples were a wide variety, including straight Virginias, an Aro, some Va/Burs and Va/Pers, and an English. So far he’s tried the Virginia varieties and says he can’t taste anything. I told him that those have a more subtle flavor profile, and that his palette may just not be attuned to them. I’m wondering though, since he vapes, that he may be so used to the fruity juice that he is expecting something of that nature.
Anyone have an opinion, or some added advice that I could pass on to him? I don’t know much else to tell him. I’ve been smoking pipes for over a decade, and have shared a lot of my knowledge with him, but maybe you guys can give me something else to pass on to him.

Seriously, it takes time and patience to extract flavours from pipe tobacco. I'm still struggling with it. Maybe he would prefer something with more topping or flavoring?

I gave him a couple of quality aros, but he hasn’t tried them yet. He says he enjoys a fairly robust, earthy cigar, so I put together another sample pack for him this morning with some Latakia forward blends, some Perique forward blends, and a couple more aros. We’ll see how it goes I guess.

You have led the horse to water. Now, you wait.

That! They need to want to do it too. Pipes are weird things, they don't reward you in any way at the start, in fact they make it hard, unpleasant and annoying for the smoker.

I have pipes for 10 years or more, but only became a regular smoker the last 2 years, and started vaping 4 years ago, about a month after quitting cigarettes. I still vape but it doesn't do anything for me, vape is an annoying habit much like cigs, pipes are my enjoyment.

Aromatics from MacBaren was the first thing I tried, and I got nothing out of them, Amphora burley was my second smoke, and it was a bit better. It took Dunhill Nightcap to make me get it and smoked that for 2 years straight until I found this forum, sky's the limit after that!

I don't expect a vaper who hasn't "gotten" pipe smoking to get anything out of it from straight Virginias, start with a strong English :)
