New stems are fairly inexpensive. But as far as pipe value goes, is it better to fix the original stem if at all possible or just put a new one on it.

I've had several pipes restemmed. As a clenched it's necessary from time to time. When a do get a new stem I always go with lucite over vulcanite as its a lot tougher material.

I'm guessing the value of a collectible pipe will go down with a reconditioned stem or worse, a replacement stem.

But a good, non-collectible pipe (Ardor, Ser Jacopo, Cavicche, Rinaldo, etc.) will hold its value despite the repair or replacement.

It depends. You are probably talking about estate pipes, I reckon?

Depending on their condition, a new stem could be a good investment because they will give your estates a new "life".
