Is it odd that I don’t like American burley blends, but dark fired and euro/imperial are solidly in my rotation?

Similarly, I thought I didn’t like DFK and avoided blends containing it until I tried some HU blends a couple years ago. I realized that (to me at least) DFK tastes completely different in the HU stuff than it does in other blends.
Interesting how dark fired is so much different than both burley and Latakia, yeah?
Not weird at all! US grown Burley is a totally different animal than the African and Indian grown Burleys that a lot of European manufactures use. The flavor profile is wildly different and I find the African and Indian Burleys to be a lot smoother and less harsh/abrasive as well.
That Dark Fired Kentucky DFK is good stuff. I've been smoking it straight, layered with Golden Days of Yore. The C&D DFK is different than Gawith twists with Dark Fired Kentucky-Africa-or something. Both provide excellent smoke.
I happen to enjoy Burleys like Pegasus and Old Joe Krantz. For me these are different than the strong dark fired and euro/imperial blends I think you are talking about. Not strange at all that you like one, but not the other.
Then there is Semois - a Burley of a different stripe. I very much enjoy smoking that. Different than anything I mentioned above.

I love ripping through a pouch of 5Bros (especially when there’s a bunch of bird’s eyes in it), I wish I enjoyed the strong American burleys too.
I find a huge difference between the burleys used in C&D manufactured blends versus others like Peretti, WCC, and Sutliff (too soon?). To me the former can be very stout and often harsh, while the latter are mild and soft. My only extended experience with non-American burley is HH Burley Flake, and that’s smooth as silk.
My understanding is that Peretti, WCC, Uhle’s, and Boswell’s burleys are/were all sourced from Sutliff. It must be all in the Sutliff case.
