I question why everyone was not washing their hands before this?

Because this virus can be rather serious for the elderly, those with weakened immune systems and pre-existing conditions (particularly respiratory conditions).

Unlike other cold and flu viruses, which can be rather serious for the elderly, those with weakened immune systems and pre-existing conditions (particularly respiratory conditions).

I've never understood why people don't habitually wash their hands after using the restroom. It's not that you crap on your hands; it's that you've been in a public place where some fecal and other biological material is spread around. Also, even in an ultra-maintained restroom, it's just a good opportunity to wash your hands of all the crud on doors, desks, phones, walls, shoe laces, etc. etc. People should have been washing hands about five or six times a day, and now should double that. Let your inner obsessive compulsive disorder blossom. But the people who use the bathroom and don't wash their hands are just being shitty, literally, even if they just used the urinal. In the best of times, not washing hands creates vectors for hepatitis, among other ills.

Even when you wash your hands in public, those air blower dryers aerosolize pathogens. The trick is to just wear diapers.

Yeah, those restroom blow dryers are turkeys. Somewhere someone had posted "directions" for using one of them: push button, wave hands under blowing air; wipe off hands on pants."
