Well guys, I took your advice and purchased several Missouri Meerschaums along with several tins of tobacco and various supplies. I also decided to make my first substantial pipe a meerschaum and purchased a MeerQueen pipe from the meerschaum store online. Just got it in yesterday and already love it!! Of course, the corncobs came in first and I was able to advance my skill level on them. I am still semi lost!!LOL The bowl gets hot, moisture occurs, the bowl goes out, etc.!! There is definitely a learning curb with this hobby.
I purchased some Dunhill Early Morning and Elizabethan Blend, Squadron Leader, Balkan Sasieni, and Capstan Blue. Haven't tried the Early Morning or Balkan Sasieni yet. I do enjoy the Capstan Blue and Elizabethan Blend. I can't get into the Squadron leader believe it or not. Damn, it smells just like a pile of burning autumn leaves!! I didn't realize that I had no aromatics so I ordered some Dan Tobacco Milonga.
My plan of attack is to get a Briar next month and use the meerschaum during the rest periods. I would love some tips on other aromatics and virginias.

Glad to see you're off and running! As for the aros, get yourself some Lane Limited 1Q, you won't be disappointed! As for Virginias, I'm not really a fan of them so maybe someone else will chime in on that one for you. I did just try some McClelland "Deep Hollow" which is a stoved Virginia blend, and I really enjoyed it! That makes 2 Va blends that I kinda like, the other is McClelland "221b Black Shag", also a stoved Va blend.

There is a learning curve. When I first started my challenges had to do with three things. My tobacco was too wet. I packed too tight. I smoked too fast. Patience and experimenting with moisture, packing and technique overcomes. Hang in there! Lanes 1Q is a good aromatic. Dunhill Flake is a good VIrginia. I think everyone should try them both.

+1 on the 1Q and the Dunhill Flake, also for an aro I would suggest Ashton's Rainy Day it's the only aro I have left in my rotation.

Common problems.

I will give you the same advice I always give - "smoke the best tobaccos and best pipes you can afford". Stay away from drugstore aros! They tend to burn hot and wet, no matter what you do. :puffy:

I'm going to respectfully disagree with the gentleman recommending Captain Black, Borkum Riff, etc. I'd suggest you run away from that.
Another +1 on Lane 1-Q, as well as LL-7. Another Aro I've enjoyed is CAO Eileen's Dream.
For Virginias, McClelland makes some great stuff, I really like Blackwoods Flake. Flakes are a tough learning curve, FYI...but worth it. I'm also a fan of McBarren Old Dark Fired.

Good on you. I'm not a huge fan of straight Virginia's myself. I need some perique or orientals in there to give them some depth.
EMP is some good stuff. It really opened me up to Orientals.
