Not sure if the other Canucks have heard the good news, but the dollar limit on general goods designated "duty-free" coming into Canada is being increased from $50 CAD to $200 CAD after a 24h absence from the country (seems we are still going to be limited to $20 grace for consumables on day-trips). 48 hours absence will allow you $800 CAD duty-free (up from $400 CAD), while the seven-day plus limit has been removed(?!? - currently $750) - or, at least isn't specified any longer - the release isn't very clear on this.
These changes will go into effect on the first of June, 2012.

This is some astoundingly good news. What a pleasant change for things related to tobacco.

Remember; tobacco is still subject to the tobacco act, and therefore has a weight limit as well as a dollar value imposed. The weights have not changed - however the increase in dollar value means we can now actually bring back the full 200g without incurring duties.

The biggest impact will be on material goods like pipes - suddenly a lot of high-end smokers fall into the duty free range.

Yeah, I was surprised too, usually the releases on budget day have me shaking my head - but this, combined with the abolution of the penny in the Fall has made me one happy camper! Now if only we can get them to abolish our ridiculous tobacco taxes...
