Unsmoked Dunhill 7-Day Root Briar Set

Wow, this one was interesting! I've seen plenty of Dunhill sets, usually they are smoked and a mix of grades. Often, the 7-day set like that brings little more or even less than the seven individual pipes would have brought on their own.
My prediction for this set was $3,100, but that was blown out of the water in the last 12 hours with six bids in the closing minutes. The seller appeared to specialize in coins.

That seems a bit silly? Almost $1,100.00 per pipe, and a Poker (!) for Sunday.

I watched this auction and can't believe what it went for? That's a little insane, but it proves pipes are always worth what someone is willing to pay for them.

That's a great set. For my money, I'd prefer new ones (not that I'd spend that much on pipes in one go), but a great set.
Just by the by, smokingpipes charges over $1,000 for Group 4 Roots.

That's an amazing set with an amazing price tag! My guess, someone had been looking for one for a very long time thereby inspiring a "buy at any price" emotional mentality.

Amazing. Now the question is; at that price does one smoke them or sit on them and flip the set in a year or two?

At current Dunhill prices that doesn't surprise me. The fact that it's a factory set certainly makes it worth more than an assembled one and unsmoked even more. It's a lot more money than I would ever spend on a set of pipes but for the dedicated Dunhill collector it's a once in a life time opportunity. When you think about it, there are people out there who spend a thousand dollars plus on a pipe all the time. The buyer in this case just had really deep pockets.
