So after having my smell and taste destroyed by Covid with a very slow recovery my palate has been way off for getting on 5? months now. All my beloved blends tasted way off or like nothing at all. When we finally sold our house and went on a 6-week road trip to look around the SE US I decided only to smoke simple single-note tobacco, various Virginias and Burleys nothing too complex with straight oriental or near to it here and there.

My taste was coming back slowly so I started smoking some latakia blends again and though muted things were going well then I got a cold and back to nothing, no taste, no smell.

I've been doing this scent therapy twice a day where you smell, 4 essences for 15 seconds each, Clove, Rose, Lemon, and eucalyptus. After a week I started to be able to smell them and the scents grew stronger every day.

Tonight my wife made red wine-marinated beef stew and after dinner and the kids went to bed I decided to rub out some Peterson Flake and left it to dry for an hour while I finished off the wine. I have been smoking Five brothers for days and barely tasting anything so I didn't expect much.

To my utter surprise and astonished elation there it was beautiful grassy sweet TOBACCO flavor. The first I've had in months.
You never know when you are gonna get it but just knowing you can still get it is a real blessing.

To my Brothers of the Briar still suffering from Covid Induced Palate Fatigue.

ALL IS NOT LOST.

Needless to say, I will indeed be boarding The Black Frigate come Christmas...

Very happy for you.

Some years ago I went through 2 years of that with a chronic sinus infection.
Smell came back temporarily only after courses of antibiotics and steroids.
Finally fixed for good with sinus surgery.
Touch wood, I'm fine now.

I hope your sense of smell and taste recover fully.

I was smoking cigars almost exclusively back then.

I'm very much into wine and food.
I decided on surgery after attending a whisky tasting and couldn't distinguish between a $30 basic blend and a limited edition retailing north of $1000
One of my mates unkindly suggested I do nothing and save myself a lot of money drinking 2 buck chuck, since I couldn't tell the difference 😤

I was very excited when I smelt a pot of freshly brewed green tea a couple of weeks post-surgery 😍

I empathize with your elation. It's amazing how completely Covid can delete your sense of smell/taste. I couldn't smell or taste anything at all for almost two weeks. I also did the essential oil scent therapy and it was shocking to not be able to detect anything even from very strong aromas like eucalyptus. I began to worry that it wouldn't come back at all. After a bit of time I began to occasionally pick up a brief whiff of something, but it was always fleeting, and ended up with still being unable to smell. My big breakthrough was when we were playing a gig at a local bar and I stepped outside during a break and caught a lingering whiff of some awful raw sewage type of odor. Even though it was vile, I was over the moon with joy at being able to thoroughly smell it. It wasn't long after that that I regained my sense of smell completely.

I hear that I actually took a big gulp of sour milk once a couple of weeks after a milder bout of Covid and though I couldn't taste or smell regularly the body did a survival override and let me know to spit it out, like you I was glad to have any sensory information at all, saved me from food poisoning.

Lol. It wouldn’t have hurt you because milk is pasteurized. But that is precisely the purpose of our taste and smell, to warn us of foods that are wholesome and of foods that are injurious. Interesting “survival override” - makes me wonder if that isn’t exactly what restored your sense of smell? The body is an amazing machine. Perhaps a bowl of Mixture 79… for medicinal purposes only. 😆
