Our featured interview on tonight's Pipes Magazine Radio Show is with Jebediah “Jebi” Green. Jebi is a 28-year old pipe smoker from Oklahoma. His interview is part of our ongoing series of pipe smokers that are under the age of 30. He works as an electrical engineer optimizing radar for airports. His path to pipe smoking went from cigarettes to vape, and then finally to pipes. Pipes changed Jeb’s reason for smoking from ingesting nicotine to relaxing and enjoying the contemplative moment. At the top of the show Brian will discuss his “EDC” or “Everyday Carry” items for pipe smoking.

The show airs every Tuesday at 8:00pm eastern US time, and can be found at PipesMagazine.com and all podcast apps.

It's always fun to come across someone who is amusingly green. While I admire his earnestness in not names names with a poor experience, it's hilarious that circumstantial details made for a dead giveaway without his awareness. If I say I bought an inexpensive churchwarden pipe at a Renaissance Fair but I don't want to mention from whom... it's like saying I bought a bloomin' onion from a steak house I won't mention, where there were no rules and it was just roight.

Uh oh, I am now curious what company you think it is haha. I am sure I gave too much but hopefully other newer people won't know to seek them out or trust those pipe distributors at Ren Faires!

Since I’m well over the under 30 crowd does that qualify me to be a codger now?

My journey to the pipe was started by the Lord of the Rings trilogy. It was cemented by my then girlfriend now wife who happened upon me enjoying a bowl once and said, “I didn’t know you smoked a pipe. That’s sexy!”. It was at that moment I knew I needed to learn as much as I could about the hobby.

It’s been fun hearing the stories of what drew these newer pipers to the hobby and how their journey has been so far!

I'm not looking to name any names that you didn't! 🤣

But I'll say this... I think your poor experience had to do more with math than intent. Renaissance Fairs are becoming more and more common as a means of bringing new pipe smokers into the fold. In these little kiosks, they're ultimately selling not a pipe but the idea - if not the ideological image - of pipe smoking.

They have to pay for their inventory, they have to pay for employees not just to work the shows, but to load and transport everything and set up displays. They have to pay to rent their space, as well as sponsorship fees. The tables, cloths, and tents aren't free either, nor are the handouts, from business cards to kitchy pamphlets or other items. So they need hundreds of sales in short order.

You're not going to get the same advice from an event staffer as you would from walking into a brick and mortar shop where the fella behind the counter might've gone to high school with Moses, but that's how you're getting a churchwarden pipe for just a few bucks. Even still, you had a bad experience but you kept smoking pipes anyway. All told, maybe it's a win.

When I heard the name Jebi I was expecting someone who wore overalls pretty much exclusively. While his interview was good I just couldn't get past the good looking suit and tie 😆 It was fun to hear Brian's answers on the fast 5.
