Just received this Ukrainian-made pearwood pipe, which I bought on Ebay for $18 (plus $10 shipping)! For the price, it's extremely well-crafted, and smokes OK, but it's bigger than I expected (should have read the dimensions) and heavy in the hand -- way too heavy for me to hold in my mouth. Still, it's a great value for only $28. (The shape is called "Drop.)

I have a pear and it is extremely light, I'm surprised yours is heavy, nice pipe though....
Welcome aboard.

To answer a couple of questions:
No, it is not varnished inside the bowl - lightly pre-charred, though. I started it out with a light alcohol rub, then honey coating.
Although there's nothing like briar, pearwood seems to smoke fine. I also have a pipe made of oak that, so far, works well.
As far as the weight, I think it's because of the size of the pipe and the thickness of the bowl, not the wood itself.

"How do you mean "there's nothing like briar"? Does it smoke hot/cold/wet/dry, any strange flavor or odor?"
No, it smokes fine - it just doesn't have the beautiful look of briar - the grain, the "feel" of the wood. And I could swear that when I light a new briar for the first time, there's a distinct "briar-y" taste. But I'm quite happy with this pearwood pipe, and also with my oak wood pipe. Haven't tried olivewood yet, but it's good to know that there are alternatives to the ever-dwindling supply of good briar. :puffy:
