I signed the petition and received two immediate auto-responders:
Baruch, Bennett
Out of Office AutoReply:
Hi,
I am out of the office, with limited access to email, and will be returning on Tuesday, October 12.
If this an urgent or time sensitive request, please contact our office at 718-963-3141 for either Antonio Reynoso, areynoso@council.nyc.gov, or Rudsena Hernandez, rhernandez2@council.nyc.gov.
Thank you.
He's going to have a lot of freakin' email when he gets in tomorrow.
And here is the typical B.S. response from a typical B.S. politician.

Re: Proposed Smoking Ban
Thank you for your email regarding the Mayor Bloomberg’s proposal to ban smoking from beaches, parks, and pedestrian plazas.
In general, I support the Mayor’s efforts to reduce smoking in our city and am pleased that smoking is no longer allowed in restaurants and bars. However, as this law would apply to public outdoor areas, I am curious to learn more about how it would work logistically and how it would be enforced. I look forward to hearing from other New Yorkers and learning more during the Council’s public hearing process.
Thank you, again, for sharing your views. I appreciate your comments and will weigh your feedback as I consider this legislation moving forward.
Sincerely,

Jessica Lappin
Give me a break.

That is a really stupid response that you got Kevin.
What she says:

"I am pleased that smoking is no longer allowed in restaurants and bars."
What I hear:

We love taking away the rights of the property owner of a privately owned establishment.
What she says:

"However, as this law would apply to public outdoor areas, I am curious to learn more about how it would work logistically and how it would be enforced."
What I hear:

We took away the rights of property owners. You know, those who actually own the property and pay taxes on it, so what makes you think we won't do it to public property which is owned by no one.
I can not stand these "do gooding" MF'ers!

Very similar responses to when I signed the 775% pipe tobacco tax increase, just more BS thrown in because they were from the Congressmen/women we voted into office or reelected.

In addition to my comment posted with the article I would add that this situation is an apt target for a group "smoke-in" protest. This kind of legislation is just inviting civil disobedience, and may be the galvanizing point of an unprecedented backlash.

It's one thing to make a law, it's a totally different matter trying to enforce it. I feel sure that the Police in NY, just like any other city in the whole world, have got a lot better things to do than bust people for smoking. And I would have thought that attempting to do so would be a waste of public money. Has anyone who is trying to bring this law into effect tried to cost enforcement? Next thing they'll be doing is making it illegal to walk on cracks in the pavement!
