The other day I assisted my grandma while she was getting stuff ready to move out of her house she has lived in for well over 50 years. Needless to say she has stuff EVERYWHERE especially packed into the garage. These were in a box and she said they were my papa's pipes (her dads) and then gave them to me knowing they will be in good hands. I cleaned them up and they have sat for a little over 24 hours and I will be lighting up the "squashed mater" (squashed tomato, thats the right shape isnt it?) once my LBF is dried out enough. I figure this would be a good flake smoker as the bowl is very small. I dont know if I am alone or not on this but I like really big bowls when I have a sweet aero packed.
Anyways, these are both Medicos the "mater" has a beautiful color to it and a pretty cool stem to go with it, It is stamped "MEDICO V.F.Q. IMPORTED BRIAR" . I tried my best to get the detail in the pic. The second one is stamped "MEDICO TUXEDO IMPORTED BRIAR" this one is well used...very well used. In fact they both had extremely badly charred rims that I cleaned up the best I could. I cant really find anything about these, really only interested in dates of production.
Anyways... I am happy because they are in the family stiff and I can always use some new pipes... half of mine are unsmokeable!!

Congrats redbeard - those are great looking pipes, and even better that they remain in the family.

I've always liked the VFQ with their "faux" cumberland stems, they're actually nylon. I don't think either of those lines are made any longer. The VFQ was brought out in the early 1950's--IIRC.

I envy anyone that is able to acquire a pipe that has been in the family for a while. My family has never been close knit, which is sad and disappointing as I always hoped that it would be. Still, I remember when I was very young my father had a couple pipes and I recently asked about those, hoping that maybe they were stored away somewhere. Pipe smoking never quite took with him. He wasn't very patient back then. Unfortunately it seems he threw those out years ago (Nooooooooooooooo!). Cherish those pipes Redbeard, because they truly are a treasure. :)

Thanks everyone, I've used just the first one so far and it smoked pretty well. They are both filtered pipes that I smoke without one. Maybe I will try it with a filter one day to see the difference. The only filtered pipe I have used was a cob and I immediately removed it.
They will be treasured for a long time, if only I could find some pics with him smoking them!!!

Congratulations Redbeard. A lot of us would love to have their grampa's pipes, me included. You have treasures to be sure, I love the Prince!

I read stories like this and just immediately start grinning ear to ear.
It doesn't matter that the pipes might be OTC everyman burners. We still own something that links us to our fathers, grandfathers or other family members. Talk about lucky!
I still use my granddad's "Half & Half" Czech tool every day and its always kept in his old ashtray on my desk.
I am very, very happy for you, Redbeard.
