Pictured is older Stanwell with two smoke holes from button. Was this a short term sales gimmick also offered by other makers to deflect smoke away from tongue ? I have found no noticeable benefit, restricts airflow.

They suck. I hate them. I’ve had the misfortune of buying a gorgeous pipe only to find it had that repugnant twin bore stem.

Still offered by a few makers. Love them myself but you have to be mindful to not block any of the button.
I think it's also called "dual bore". I have a couple pipes with this feature. It's alright if you're a "sipper". Difficult to keep clean as the hole's won't let a typical pipe cleaner through.
It's a ploy by the pipe cleaner manufacturers to double their sales......

Called twin bore on one of my British pipes but gimmick for sure. The pipe smokes fine but cleaning is a PITA. Not a fan but I wouldn’t pass up a great pipe because of it.
