It's wonderful that you brought these pieces into one collection that's representative of his work.

Now this is what collecting fine pipes is all about.

Background Info - Why Peter Heding?
Thanks all for the kind words. This is Peter Heding's work and all credit goes to him. I was lucky enough to have had the taste and wherewithal to accumulate these pipes.
The primary driver for me in building this collection was the obvious, amazing beauty of Peter Heding's work.
The other factors were that Peter was the first maker with whom I developed a working relationship. The second pipe I bought (the horn) had a couple of pin hole sand pits that I asked about. He immediately insisted that I send the pipe back to him and he would make a new one. All this was way before I became a member of any on-line pipe forum, club or community of pipe smokers. I was collecting pipes in somewhat of a vacuum with no encouragement, guidance or point of reference.
When Peter and I first got into contact via email, he was considering the move from part-time, hobby pipe-maker to full time artisan. For a young man with two children, another on the way, a PhD and a good career, this was a bold and scary move.
I had made the transition from insurance and pension sales into a career perusing my own passion, boats and Alaska, several years earlier. As a result we struck up a correspondence in which I encouraged him to go with his bliss. I wanted to support that move as fully as I could which ultimately resulted in the collection above.

Thodr are some gorgeous pipes, a true collection. Question, do you smoke these pipes? I couldnt imagine smoking some of them even though they were made for smoking. Also, do they fit in your had well? or are the shapes more for show as opposed to ergonomical design? hahha i've always found these abstract style pipes beautiful but cant quite put the art together with the act of smoking. sorry to bombard!

Red Fox, I have smoked eight of the twelve Hedings. The unsmoked ones are the Ramses, Volcano, Porpoise and Blowfish. They are actually quite hand friendly in their own way. All the ones I have fired up are excellent smokers. The Lion is one of my top ten as far as pure smoking qualities are concerned.
While some may not cradle in the palm of your hand, Peter Hedings pipes have a wonderful mix of edges and curves so they are interesting to handle and massage. Of course the fact that he places the shape in the block so well and brings out the grain so nicely makes them a visual feast as well. They are not just collectors pieces they are pipes as well.

That is a beautiful collection of one artist's work. It is also nice to hear that you not only got to know the maker but supported both his work and your passion. That's utopian!
