Today I received a tin of this tobacco from C&D. I won their Superbowl contest. I have been wanting to try this blend since it came out. I actually met one of the airmen at a Black History event two years ago.
I let the tin age for about two hours before I opened it. The tin note was strong tobacco flavor with lots of different flavors. This is my first plug or cake blend. I cut off a corner and broke it up into a cob. Perhaps it was too moist, but I needed effort to keep it lit initialy. The taste was stronger than the aromatics I usually smoke. It was complex. Initially, I did not like it, since I have yet to find a latakia blend I enjoy. But as the smoke continued, I began to enjoy the the various flavors. It has VA's, Perique, Turkish and Latakia in it. I was getting more and more interested in it, as the time went on. When I realized I had smoked to the bottom, I was actually disappointed to be finished.
The wifely reaction to the tin note was, "Get it away from me!". The later sniff the husband test results were "It smells like burnt leaves." Maybe this reaction is part of why I am not fond of latakia. Why use a product that repels the woman I love.
I will definitely return to the blend after it has aged more. I will remember how complex it is and study it more.

Thanks for the generous offer. Smoking this blend is like all other decisions, there are consequences. Any smoking requires going outside and a shower before the hugging etc will start again.

With Latakia blends, I've found the worse the room note is, the better it tastes! Sometimes you'll find the enjoyment is worth the negative reactions from your family members. :puffpipe:

I smoke all types of tobacco. Depending on the mood I'm in, I'll smoke anything from budget aromatic blends from Walgreens to SG XX ropes; good tobaccos are where you find 'em, eh? I am especially fond of stout Orientals and Latakia. I bought a tin of Tuskegee Airman and, after smoking about two thirds of it, in different pipes, have to say I do not like it. It tastes kind of weird, and makes ma a tad bit nauseous when I smoke it. Many other CD blends are wonderful, but Tuskeegee Airman is one I won't be revisiting.

I don't like milk. So when My wife has a bowl of special K in the morning and drinks her milk after the cereal is gone... She doesn't get any kisses until she drinks water or brushes her teeth. Sometimes she breaks this rule... So sometimes I break the rules after smoking a bowl of tobacco to get back at her lol
All in good fun.
Wives should be understanding and vice versa. Keep at it!

I wonder what the blenders at CD are thinking when they make such blends. I wonder if they even smoke a pipe.

Somebody should tell them to put that in their pipe and smoke it before putting them on the market.
Maybe these guys have leather for tongues.
The best way to sample a new tin is to smoke the tobacco in different pipes and see what taste difference there is. I always let the tobacco set awhile after making a judgement on it. If I get the same result in different pipes and after setting a month or so, then it's history. I just never reorder any more.
Your mouth changes from day to day. I've noticed when I smoke a bowl of my favorite tobacco and the next day the flavor changes, it's usually me that's changed. Try a bowl another day. I learned this from smoking Hand Rolled Cigars. It's not always the cigar or the tin that's bad. It could be your saliva mixed with the tobacco that don't mix very well. Depends on what you eat.
I have a drawer full of tins on probation. I'll smoke them until they are gone, but add them to the "NO" list of reorders. It's rear a tin will hit the garbage. I just fill the bowl half way and smoke it like that.

Yeah. I'm pretty sure they do.

Maybe I'm misunderstanding. If the tobacco tastes exactly the same each time, regardless of what pipe you smoke it in and after the tins been open for awhile...you throw it away?
To each his own I guess!

In the genre of substantial Latakia blends, I find TA to be quite tolerable (myself) and I do like it very much. I think TA is a fine blend. However in my own blend (Captain Bob's Blend) I only use a spattering of Latakia. Kind of like how I use pepper on eggs... just enough to know it is there. But, not enough for my wife to notice. She hates Latakia but loves CBB. Please don't tell her there is 1/16th Latakia in my Captain Bob's Blend! The point is, a small amount of Latakia will be noticed by the smoker and the spice it adds is tasteful. However, a small amount will likely not be noticed by the wife even though it is enjoyed by the pipe smoker. I should mention, CBB is an aromatic blend containing Latakia.

Very interesting guys. My wife couldn't care a less one way or the other, BUT, lately she has been taking more and more interest in many of the posts on this forum. She will sometimes come over to me while I am reading them and read along with me and comment on them. Hmmmm, I do believe some of you are winning her over.
