Tropical storm, formerly a hurricane, now approaching Florida, is named Isaias, pronounced ees-ah-EE-ahs, which is the Spanish Latin for the Old Testament prophet Isaiah. It is currently expected to track up the U.S. east coast with heavy winds and rain on the coast and heavy rain inland. For ongoing information, visit the National Hurricane Center online. It could regain hurricane strength, and various outer banks islands have been evacuated.

If the forecast track and tropical storm status hold, our main problem in central North Carolina, and especially in this old residential neighborhood, is power outage. We have a freezer of food and cook a lot on our electric stove. We joke that when we spill a glass of water, the power goes out -- that is, even a light rain seems to shut if off. It's gotten a little better, but maybe not in the face of three or four inches of rain. And this is on top of a lot of rain lately. We're on high ground, but there will be flooding in the area. Power line repairs may not be prompt. It's a long hurricane season in these parts. You'all might get a rest from my posting ... that's the upside.

I always thought that the term "high ground" when coupled with the place "Florida" was supposed to be an oxymoron. Is it true that the highest elevation of land in Florida is 300' above mean sea level? Even in the panhandle?

Of course, Mean Sea Level ain't down where it used to be any more.
