Whenever you use water in the bowl of a pipe in quantity, you will need to let it dry for several days. Anywhere from 3 days up to about a week depending on relative humidity.

I always keep the cake in my pipes at bare minimum. I always rinse with water after a good cleaning, do let them dry well as stated above. As far as that McClelland smoke you tried just take it slow and don't rush it. Relights are no big deal. Try not to puff like a train drawing that smoke across you tongue non stop. Always use some Aloe Vera juice pre and post smoking. I have never had tongue bite doing this. That is some great smoke your smoking to me, this is my opinion. I love Virginia,Latakia blends. I use aromatic pipe tobacco as potpourri in bowls around the house that's its extent in this house ;)

Yea it sounds like you're getting a little steam from the water absorbed in the briar. Next time use a soft cloth or paper towel just dampened with some ever clear after reaming inorder to get any of the loose ash and bits out of the bowl. Cork knocks work well for me if use gently to knock out the bigger stuff.
The steam is also what causes Aero's to give tongue bite and make a pipe smoke wet if drawn to fast and hard.

Just to clarify a bit. I only use water to rinse after a good ream and deep clean with salts, alcohol treatment. I have been doing this for over 20 years and have never had a problem rinsing with water.

From what I have read, tongue bite is caused by alkalinity. Burning your tongue with steam is something else.

As for what usmarines said, it seems sensible. The shank of a pipe is exposed to moisture all the time.
If a pipe is rinsed with water, then dried, especially with an hygroscopic like alcohol, it shouldn't harm the pipe.

That said, you won't see me run a $300 Rinaldo under the tap!

Yes probably overdid it, did not intend to use it for the 3 oaks so wanted to clear out the taste - very large bowl wanted for a milder aromatic -

now not sure what.

Will give it a few days or will have it reamed to fresh briar. - pricy pipe - lesson learned.
Just bought some mc clelland tastemaster which i had intended to use with this pipe will try it in a few days - - will be more careful when offered to try other smokers' tobaccos.
PS - What is aloa vera juice ! - the gel is used topically for sunburn, rashes etc - found in drug stores.

never seen the juice - where would i begin to look for this stuff ??
thanks for replies

Walmart has Aloe Vera juice. It contains over 95% aloe juice, it's in a gallon jug in the pharmacy section. I use it for pre and post smokes, and drink a glass a day for the proven benefits. My Grandmother mixed her own with her home grown Aloe and she lived to 101, my grandfather never touched the stuff and died at 62 with colon cancer. It also has been tested and proved that with animals that were tested with the juice lived a more healthy way of life and lived 10 to 20% longer. I also give it to my dog that suffers from type 1 diabetes and it really has helped stabilize his blood sugar, with less insulin.

I use boiling water to remove old cake in bowls of used estates works like a charm plug up the stem with cotton and fill. Just let it sit until tepid ,drain ,repeat until the cake starts falling out .Keeps me from having ream it out and there is no danger of hurting the bowl . Get a Coalman lantern funnel to pour water into the bowl and only the bowl .Clean with alcohol of your choice . Dry in cool dark place away from light for two weeks .Do not place in window sill of kitchen . I think my method helps with ghosts .
