You can't go wrong with Savinelli, Stanwell, Brigham, BC as they have lines in most price ranges and are reliable pipes. The estate arena offers a chance to get a "better" quality pipe for reasonable money in may cases. At the end of the day it all comes down to the size of the pocketbook.

@fading Thanks buddy, my 4 MM Country Gentlemen are in transit from Aristocob currently.
@Tim Thats exactly I am doing, the Radford Action S I got is only $20 including shipping. Building my 7 day set. I dont snipe either, I put my max bid and move on. Btw Smokey Bastard arrived 2 days ago, I am waiting on my Jeantet pipes from Denmark to arrive so I can finally taste it.
Sweet Smokes,

Chris :puffpipe:

Estates all day.
I own two pipes that I bought brand new: a MM cob and a Mitchell Thomas 7" semi-churchwarden. I highly recommend the Mitchell Thomas because it was cheap, looks great and is wonderful if you need shorter smoke.
Everything else I own are estates that I've gotten lucky to have bought with cleaning/polishing done or have had to do myself.

When you get to a certain level and price in pipes, the choice is yours; it's a question of personal

preferences and taste. But at low to mid price levels, my list would include:

Sav, Stanwell, MM Cob, Old Dominion Cob, Johs, Nording, Neerup, Chacom, BC, Parker, Britannia,

and others. I think there are about thirty brands that have uniformly high standards that you

can usually trust. My experience with Peterson has been fine, but obviously the discussion on Forums

says not everyone feels that way. Likewise, I feel fine about the briar versions of Kaywoodie, Yello-Bole,

and Dr. Grabow. I think Vuillard is a good French pipe, but it is not a big seller, so I don't list it.

I have a favorite carver or two, but one doesn't even sell online, so I won't mention him. I very much

like Iwan Ries Exclusives mostly made by Benton in the U.S. Jobey's made a good French pipe I enjoy,

but I have only owned the one.

PTM Amadeus, a Greek pipe, has a reasonably priced line at Iwan Ries web site, and both Cup O Joes

and Iwan Ries offer GiGi pipes, which is a lower priced but well designed Italian pipe.

Cobs are great smokers, but unless you are going to a "pioneer days" festival or are a civil war reenactor their sense of style leave much to be desired. Save your money and get a Savinelli.

For briar - hands down a Comoy or Savinelli

That said, MM Cob - love the humble little pipes - never disappoint.

There's everything right with the pipes recommended above. In fact although I have 4 $200.00 - $300.00 pipes, most are a good deal more honest. In the end most of us most of the time make a compromise between what we can afford and what we like. It's easy to spend too much money on pipes. Even so I must plug higher-grade artisan pipes. When I can afford them I'm definitely going to spark my pedestrian collection with a few, more in the realm of Rad Davis than S. Bang. Why? Because they get all the details right, but more importantly their work is so much more beautiful to behold.
Take a look at Qualitybriar.com and smokingpipes.com.

Savinelli, Stanwell, Butz Choquin and Chacom are all great smokes and ,if you want a new pipe, are not too high new. Estate, you can get great deals on Charatan, GBD (as long as you don't want a Rhodesian, these guys are killing me) Comoy, etc, etc, and get more pipe for less money.

If you see a Danish pipe called a Bari as an estate pipe, in good shape, it is probably a winner.

I have one that is 35 or more years old, a great smoker, that looks almost new, a fine bent

billiard with a large capacity bowl. Just an all around fine pipe.

My current lineup :

1. 4 MM Corn Cob Country Gentleman

2. 1 Rick Black Freehand Sitter

3. 1 Radford Action S

4. 2 Jeantet Jubilee Pipes made in 1951

5. 1 Erik Nording 190 Handmade (short smoke)

6. 1 Peterson Aran 150 FT (plain version)
Upcoming Comissions

1. 1 Butera Beckler Meerschaum Clay

2. 1 Lonely Crow Pipes Paul Bunyon
A few bids on ebay which can be restored perfectly with restaining, rustication etc.
Cheers,

Chris
