Someone was talking in another forum about pipe tobaccos that can also be used as rolling tobaccos. I wonder about these, are they good quality? I would like to learn what brands do this and more about this type of tobacco I would like this for myself to have on occasion.
Edit: Moved to Pipe Tobacco Discussion. L

Greetings smokinggun.

I like to roll either Dark Birdseye or Kendal Kentucky.

Ether one makes for a flavorful smoke with, IMO, DBE be the tastier and the KK delivering the quickest nicotine.

Thanks OTD! I also wonder these tobaccos are they not to be inhaled into the lungs unlike cigarettes and are most pipe tobaccos?
I look for a tobacco that can be used every now and then like a cigarette when wanted and like pipe tobacco most of the time.

When I roll a smoke I do so with the intent to inhale. I have rolled several other pipe blends out of curiosity but the 2 mentioned previously have the best flavor for me.

I rarely inhale with the pipe as the smoke tends to be to harsh on the the throat.

Prince Albert and Velvet. Both can and have been used for RYO.

I've heard that some people like to roll Stokkebye tobaccos into cigarettes, but I have never tried this myself, not being a cig smoker. I think Stokkebye makes a line of tobaccos that is designed specifically for RYO, and I think it's the stuff that my brother uses on occasion.

smokinggun;
Lets do the flipflop here instead. Ur looking for a pipe tobac that can be rolled, For 30 yrs i also smoked cigs. Well even now i keep a light blue pouch of Drum (made by Benson & Hedges)Cig tobac in my stash. Every once in awhile (maybe once or twice a month) i git a craving for cig tobac. Its in a stringy form and packs awsome into pipe. U can have almost exact cig experience with it. Its actually used here commonly as a pipe tobac but it is a rolling tobac. sometimes i will add a drop or 2 of menthol liquid or better a drop of vanilia extract

Off topic - mostly - but related.
Freshman year in college, guy from two doors down in the dorm comes to see me. He is out of cigs, and short on cash, and needs his fix now. I was trying Flying Dutchman at the time, so I gave him some. He told me later he had no rolling papers, so used looseleaf notebook paper - and it was awful.
I have heard the same about Prince Al - it can switch. You could always find some Caporal, for that true French smoker's experience. :D

In the past I've used both Carter Hall and Half & Half for rolling Pipe Tobacco cigarettes, and yes, I did inhale them both.

Just about any virginia or burley without a casing can be smoked as a cigarette, and then so can most turkish heavy blends as well. The big thing that should be kept in mind is that most pipe tobaccos need to be dried out a fair bit before they are suited to fags.
Another thing to note is that shag is (in my opinion) the best cut for fags. YMMV, but I wouldn't use anything with large bits in it if I could help it, generally, the thinner the better.

This is where some small amount of science comes into play. Cigarette tobacco is generally treated, both in additives and processing, to be slightly acidic, and less of an irritant on the soft tissue of the mouth and upper respiratory tract, as well as the lungs. This slight acidity (averages ~4.75-6.25 pH) also serves to deliver nicotine to the lungs as a free-base radical. Conversely, pipe and cigar tobacco are on the opposite side of neutral pH, averaging between 7.8-8.5 pH. This alkalinity is more irritant to the URT, and so less amenable to inhalation; it also serves to aid the absorption of nicotine into the soft tissue of the mouth and mucous membranes.
TMI, I know, but I was just researching the topic and had to share

+1 on nsfisher: In college I smoked Drum (blue pouch, originally douwe egberts) both in RYO cigs and pipe. I ran across a pouch here the other day... Almost bought it for old times sake. But then I saw it was now Republic tobacco ?

PS has silk cuts that will knock your socks off . About 45 for 10oz . I make my own cigarettes and can not abide by premades any more . A good quality cigarette that you make yourself is very nice treat much akin to a pipe . About a ten minute smoke .We are not talking Gambler , Bugle , Zig Zag or Chris Cross here .

My son has recently used my Half&Half as a RYO. He liked it. He has been smoking Cup O Joes Robust RYO baccy lately... hmm, maybe I need to smoke a cob full of that tomorrow. Stay tuned!

Nearly forgot about this, but smoked a small bowl (MM Pony) of the RYO I mentioned earlier... It was like smoking a really big cig! Very Marb Red in taste etc, but too much of it for my tastes. I've smoked it in RYO cig form and its awesome, but definitely not desined for a pipe IMO. That said, any opinions on how a "pipe tobacco" like SuperValue or Smokers Pride cavandish blends smoke in a pipe. I see reviews for them on tobaccoreviews.com and some folks seem to like em.
