Hey, I've been searching Yelp with no luck. I'm in New York for the week, and was hoping to score some American pipe tobaccos to take home across the pond -- save the postage and all that. Does anyone know where I might find a good (or even any) tobacconist in New York. I'd love to be able to take some Frog Morton and others home :)

What scarface said. Retail here is very expensive. However, if you really just want a look see in NYC, I would also agree, Barclay-Rex.

I've been to Nat Sherman and both Davidoff stores. They had what I wanted, with great customer service.

I used to work in NYC and Nat's was the place I would go. For pipes, it is not awesome but it is good. As already noted by others, New York taxes on tobacco are quite high (70%) so the prices will be high.

Nat Sherman at 12 East 42nd Street, Cliff Gold, Lead Sales Associate. I recommend picking up three or four ounces of Nat Sherman 536, a great English. It has a huge clock over the door, and plenty of comfortable chairs for catching a smoke. Barkley-Rex up the street is much smaller, but they may have another, larger store -- I'm not sure about that.

It was really cool to go to Nat Sherman's and look around and enjoy a bowl.
Great atmosphere, great people, but yeah the pricing is not cheap there.

NYC rents are so high that you can buy online for half the price. As mentioned above, Barclay Rex is probably the best place, but expect to pay $16-18 for a $7 can of tobacco. Barclay was formerly the Peterson chain, not connected with the pipemaker. I worked in the 42nd st Peterson as a summer job in high school, back in the 1950s.

You can place an online order and have it delivered to your hotel. Just call your hotel and ask for addressing instructions and whether they'll hold the package for you if it arrives early. Most will do this for you.

I used to think that every pipe town had a pipe shop like The Briary here in Birmingham, until I visited New York. I was very disappointed in both places I went to, including Barclay Rex. And, I quickly began to appreciate what we have here. The Briary is a high end pipe art gallery by comparison to any pipe shop that i have been in. Actually, I have not found another shop that even compares.

Forget New York, come visit Alabama, ha ha!!
