Life is a learning experience. When a person is a teenager or in their twenties they think they know everything and they don't know shit. Then when you get into your 60's + years and have acquired a small amount of knowledge, nobody wants to listen to you. Two things that I have learned through the years are 1) as you get older the floor gets farther away and everything ends up there and 2) the taste of tobacco many times depends on me. There are two many variables when it comes to pipe smoking. The taste of tobacco can depend on what pipe I'm smoking (briar or cob), how it is packed, is it dry or moist, do I sip or smoke rapid fire, am I congested or have a cold, weather conditions and on and on and on. Tobaccos that I wasn't wild about at first when done differently ended up being much better and even a favorite. Of course, there are some tobaccos that just don't meet our requirements. I guess the gist to this rambling is DON'T THROW AWAY THAT TOBACCO! Tobacco needs to be learned and understood before it can be evaluated. I know I'm preaching to the choir with most Pipe Forum members, but there may be some newbies that can appreciate some lessons from this man's life.

I am always amazed when I get a small batch or a new blend that they hype up to taste totally unique. So then you have to buy it to taste this uniqueness, but it ends up tasting almost like something else. I surmise that men don't want totally uniqueness in their pipe. The first time I had a latakia blend, gag. The first time I tasted a cigar blend.
But, it wasn't until I had smoked something similar that I started making olfactory connections. After trying a few other blends with latakia or cigar leaf that I started to find the good in the blends.

This is why when you taste something that you hate at first, we say to hang onto it. You may be able to enjoy it more after you've expanded your olfactory knowledge a bit. What you hate today, you might enjoy more tomorrow. Keep an open mind.

I think this is why blenders don't go out on a limb very far when they come up with a new blend. Honestly, you could just blindly mix handfuls of stuff without thinking and you'd get something smokable. But, to make a blend that is different, but almost like something else is an art form. I mean, if a blender made something totally unique, unlike any tobacco out there, many probably wouldn't like it because smokers wouldn't be able to connect it to another experience.

I also think this is why when someone finds something that they like, they'll ask us for other blends just like it, which is actually very weird if you think about it. Why not just smoke the one you liked instead of chancing it on another one similar, that you may not like.

I still don't like Mixture 79 though, and I've had other licorice flavored stuff.
