I've heard it's good practice to romove the unsmoked bits of tobacco from the inside of the bowl. Trouble is that it's always stuck on there pretty well and there is a lot of it. I go in with a pipe cleaner and it gets out a lot of it but there are alway quite a few stubborn pieces that the cleaner won't get. I have to remove these pieces manually. It's a new pipe. About 6 bowls in. Is this just something that I have to put up with until a proper cake builds up or am I doing something wrong?

If a pipe cleaner is the only tool you use, you will have to put up with it.

The bowl should be scraped with the spoon end of a proper tamper.

I and several others around here then pack and twist a paper towel into the bowl

as if trying to burnish the walls. Cake develops more slowly, but harder.

I also typically use a paper towel and wudge (that's a technical term) it up to do a gentle ream of the bowl after pulling out any remaining tobacco/dottle at the end of a smoke.

I have never met so many worrisome people until I met the nobs on here.

It happens. Moisture from the tobacco sticks to the bowl and bits of tobacco will stick to that. Such is life. Most folks call those bits dottles.

Relax man, smoking a pipe is not supposed to be a tedious even. Its supposed to be relaxing.

Have you ever played a game called whats the worst thing that can happen?

Well, what is the worst thing that can happen if a few bit of tobacco are stuck to the bowl after each smoke?
Ya have to use the pick on ya Czech tool to pick it loose to clean the bowl after each use. Ok its part of cleaning ya pipe after each smoke.

Thanks a lot for the response. I do have a tamper with a spoon. Was always a bit worried about scraping of my cake. Perhaps I'm worrying too much. How long should I wait after a smoke to get in there with a paper towel?

@ Cortez - Great minds ... and all that.
Perhaps I'm worrying too much.

I don't think that there's anything wrong with wanting to learn more about your hobbies and interests. I wouldn't let it stress you out, but sure, ask questions and try new things, and figure out what works best for you. :)

Um...

As soon as you empty the ash.
Empty the ash and dottles, run pipe cleaner down the stem and wipe out the bowl.
Then sett aside the pipe until next use.
You will be fine scraping the bowl with that spoon . Just dont dig hard . Gentle and relaxed.

Frankly, I think this is a great example of how everyone places so much emphasis on the building of cake in their pipes. With newcomers such as the OP reading these kind of posts, they are all paranoid about not touching the cake.

OP: Trust me, it takes a lot of smoking and a lot of misuse and abuse to build a cake like some of the horror images here. In fact, you will find it very difficult to build a cake that requires reaming if you smoke with some sort of logic... when you finish your pipe, empty the contents and wipe out the bowl. You will find that you don't have to baby your pipe, and you will worry less about disturbing your cake and worry more about the tobacco you are smoking.

Relax, and enjoy your smoke, and don't worry so much.
