Good afternoon all. It’s been a few years since I was on this forum and almost just as many since I’ve smoked my pipes. I went through and inventoried my cellar after not touching the jars and tins since 2016. I was wondering if this tobacco will still be good to consume or pass onto others and worth their while. I have posted a full list so perhaps you can tell me what is worth saving or tossing. Thank you in advance. 291C92DC-B2AD-4F0E-9E84-01FD06614621.jpeg

Sealed tins would be fine, jars are based on quality of the tobacco is it dried out, etc., there is also a trust involved to say "people would pay good money for it" maybe some people if you have a good reputation, unknown seller might be a bit of a tougher sell.

Everyone was an unknown seller at some point, though, so the only way to get reputable is to list them for sale.

To be fair , I have no idea how much these are worth. I just found out today that Dunhill has ceased production of their own blends and handed it over to Peterson. Also that McClelland went out. These are very sad things to hear.

Dunhill ceased production of their blends around 1980. Since then the production has been outsourced, most recently with Scandinavian Tobacco Group, which also owns the rights to the Peterson tobaccos. STG bought the rights to continue to make the “Dunhill” blends under the Peterson label.
McClelland closed up in 2018, after deciding it was time to retire. They weren’t interested in selling the company since it would have likely gone downhill in different hands.
Your tobaccos are likely fine. It’s only been a few years. As for prices, you can get an idea by checking out pipestud.com, Steve Fallon’s site, as well as sales from members here.

Thank you very much for this information. I will look into pricing as you suggested. The one tobacco I haven’t tried on my list is the Penzance. I bought it impulsively as I know how difficult it is to acquire and could never bring myself to crack the tin.

I have bulk tobacco that I have stored in mason jars from over 15 years ago which has only improved with time. That being said, if you are worried about your tobacco having gone bad I would be willing to assume the risk of consuming it for you... ?

Latakia mellows out and english blends get better over time. Most sealed tins are fine, just watch out for the hockey puck style tins as they can pop. Mason jars sealed properly will last ages. The virginia leaves will form little sugar crystals over a long time of being sealed up. Smoke it up!

I think you will find all of it is still good, barring any seal failures.

Some of it will be exceptional and a few will have risen in value quite a bit, should you decide to sell any, due to being out of production. (like the Vintage Syrian and Frog Morton)

Go study the tobacco sales threads to get an idea.

Years ago I bought 57 pounds (if memory serves) of Balkan Sobarnie white in 7 oz. tins. It was quite old and unfortunately about a third of the cans had rust spots on the bottom which means the vacuum seal was broken and the tobacco was dry as a bone. I sold most of the good cans but kept the rusty ones. Because I hate waste I took all the tobacco out of the rusty cans and put it together and humidified it, letting it sit for a few weeks. The result was some smokable tobacco, but lacking in flavor because the oils had already broken down. Still, not bad. puffy
