Colleagues,

I am curious if there's any conventional wisdom regarding the order in which one should smoke different types of tobacco in multiple bowl smoking sessions. In wine tasting, it's generally accepted that one should tastes heavy dry reds before the sweeter reds and whites. So, using this logic, would one smoke a English style with lots of Latakia before choosing an aromatic? I'm probably over-thinking this, but I'd like to hear your opinions.

Interesting thought. Of course this assumes you do not dedicate your pipes.
If I may add a question to your list; does anyone smoke different blends back to back to purposely experience the ghost of the first blend with the subsequent smoke?

I have done this only a few times.. But since I like english MORE I smoke it first with a fresh pallet.
And on the occasion that I will follow with a 2nd bowl of something I may try another english or an aro.
But never the aro first.
So for me it's the blend that I like most that will come first. Followed by the a lesser liked blend. English or Aro. But never Aro first.
So I never started with an aro i REALLY like, and then follow with an english that I didn't like as much as that Aro.
But I'm just really messed up in the head... so.... Take that with a few spoons of salt. Because I'm crazy.
I find that if I sip a glass of water in between bowls it cleans about 80% of the tobacco taste from the previous bowl. But who has that much time? :puffy:

Haha, sorry biloxi123. I assumed they were all in the same pipe. That went right over my head.
I'll dedicate a separate thread for the purposeful ghosting question.

Hey Biloxi, that mean you live in the Biloxi area? I prefer to do straight Virginia or light Va/Per blends early in the day, and always in a Virginia dedicated pipe. Seems like the Virginias taste ashen to me if I start off with anything else. I like burleys for an all day smoke, often Sterling Double Eagle or C&D Epiphany. Then I like a good Balkan in the evening. Right now I am doing Peterson Sherlock Holmes first, then McClelland VBC (an aromatic, I know) and ending the day with GL Pease Lagonda. I only get 3 pipes a day while I am working, lol.

If I smoke an English in the morning, it seems to mess up my taste buds for VAs and VaPers which are my predominant choice.

For me a heavy lat blend like C&D Pirate Kake would be like a kick to the face if it was my first bowl in the morning. As for a multiple bowl smoking session, I believe that the heavier lat blends would muddy the taste buds for a follow up bowl that would contain something with a more subtle sweetness which may go unnoticed.

I would migrate from more to less subtle. Start with the virginias or light orientals, then shift to balkan, English.
I can't say I've done wine tasting, but I know when drinking I appreciate the nuances of the first glass or two, then the tastebuds up and walk away. Might start the evening with a Kilkenny and find I end the evening drinking Molson Canadian. :)

If I was going to smoke 2 bowls of different blends in close proximity, I would do something to cleanse the palate in between - perhaps a nice glass of water.
