Brian addressed an interesting phenomenon that I've noticed but didn't pay much attention to until episode 25. I have tobacco from a wide range of producers, or so I thought, until I began to scrutinize my cellar. I was surprised at the amount of McClelland and GL Pease blends I've collected compared to other brands. McClelland blends by far outweigh all of them.
I don't experience the 'ketchup' taste that has been referred to in McClelland tobaccos. I've tried Mac Baren blends and they are almost unpalatable for me.
Your insights on this topic make a lot of sense, Brian. Thanks for the show.

I find the Ketchup smell with some McClelland's but it doesn't transgress to the taste, I too almost wrote off Mac Baren but have found a few good ones.

McClelland's is one of my favorite tobacco companies but I enjoy many others, GLP, C&D, Germain's, Sam Gawith, and several others, I have a little of everything.

This post made me curious about my own habits. At the risk of offering more information than anyone cares about, here's how my cellar breaks down by brand. (Note that the totals represent a variety of tins: most are 2oz, but there are some 8oz and 1lb tins in this count as well.)
Brebbia - 11

Butera - 20

C&D - 21

Dan - 27

Dunhill - 44

Esoterica - 58

Fox - 1

GL Pease - 175

Gawith & Hoggarth - 20

H&H - 10

JF Germain - 18

James Norman - 20

MacBaren - 14

McClelland - 211

McCranie's - 17

Peterson - 2

Rattray's - 88

Robert Lewis - 20

Robert McConnell - 12

Samuel Gawith - 55

Sasieni - 20

Solani - 6

Sutliff - 4
Clearly, McClelland and Pease are the winners here!

My cellar, such as it is, also tips heavily to McClelland and Dunhill.

With as much Peterson as I stock I was surprised to find so many unopened Frogs and VA tins from McClelland's. Guess it's pretty even between those two.

Don't have much of a cellar yet, but if I had the funds to build one GLP, C&D and Dunhill would definitely dominate.

I will weigh in on McClelland since they offer such variety even within the same general categories of tobacco. However, GLP, Gawith and even McConnell dominate my cellar. I have tried C&D blends and could never get into any of their offerings.

McClelland's is the best tobacco company
Yes, I agree in the USA.

And overseas I couldn't pick a favorite between Gawith & Hoggarth, Samuel Gawith, or Germain.
My thoughts exactly :)

As a newly returning pipe smoker I am looking forward to the quest for the perfect bowl. My first is a GLP and will explore the gambit as it takes me!
