Okay, I've never had tobacco in a tin before. Do you generally leave it in the tin once opened? or do you transfer it to a jar?
I apologize if this has been answered before, out of all my reading I've never seen this discussed. Just wanting to make sure I keep it well stored.
Thanks in advance everyone!

I always transfer mine to a jar once opened. Some tins do better than others keeping tthe tobacco from drying out, but it will eventually dehydrate. If you plan on smoking the entire contents in a couple of weeks time, however, there should be no problem leaving it in the tin.

If you finish the tin within 2-3 weeks you'll be fine leaving it in the tin. If you take longer, the tobacco will likely dry out before you finish the tin. Jar it unless you smoke lots.

I'm a pretty slow smoker. Generally have 2 bowls a day and all that I have is lasting quite a long time. I'll jar it up, need to get some slight large ones though since I'm having to split a tin into two small jars. Would be nice to have it all in one just for organizational purposes.

A round tin with a screw down top and a rubber gasket inside the lid will keep longest. Some I've had for months and they kept ok. The plastic lids don't do as long, nor tins that are rectangular.

As I don't buy bulk, all my tobacco stays in the sealed tin until I decide to begin smoking it. Once open it goes straight into a jar. This way it stays moist enough to last an easy 6 months of perfect smoking. I usually have 3 -4 tins open and in jars at any given time. Usually an English, a Burley and an Aro plus something about to finish.

@skydog Well all be damned, it does screw down once opened.....had no idea lol. Thanks!
@pappymac I'm sure I could fit it into the 4oz container but I don't like compressing the tobacco so much. I like it nice and fluffy! Weird I know.
@dottiewarden Thanks, I'm trying not to keep to much open at once. Just to avoid things drying out.

Don't be afraid to smoke your tobacco a little on the dry side.
I agree completely, however I do prefer to retain as much moisture as I can during storage and dry just the right amount out when I'm about to smoke.

Right now I'm not sure what the right dryness is. I'm starting to piece it together. My Captain Black white is a great smoke, a little on the dry side but not crunchy - great flavor and seem to smoke cooler. All the others I seem to make my pipe super hot with.
Heck, I'm still working on cadence. Just that right feel between puffs to keep it going and cool.

If you want to leave the tobacco in a tin and you think it might take a while to smoke, there's an easy compromise to putting it into a jar. Cut a piece of wax paper or aluminum foil that is larger than the tin by an inch or so. Seal the tin with the aforementioned as a gasket between the tin and the lid. Open tins can be stored this way for months without drying out the tobacco.

I do the same to reseal a tin with aluminum foil with two modifications. First of all I use a double folded aluminum foil as the single foil can easily tear, in addition a double foil aluminum increase the seal. And to improve the seal I cut the aluminum foil just below the lid and I seal it with an electric tape placed between the foil and the lid. This way you can have a very good seal and you can save space without using jars.

Do press as much as you can into the jar. You want less oxygen, not more. And, besides, it can be fluffed up after opening. If you can't do it, there are professional fluffers you could hire.

I systematically transfer any open tins into an airtight container. I make sure the tobacco is compressed. I just filled up my 107th airtight container with 2oz of MCC Blending Latakia.

I find most blends remain in good shape for several months in an opened tin, so if a blend is in regular rotation, I won't jar it. But if I see my use is slowing down, I'll jar it. Most blends burn more evenly and taste a little better when they dry out somewhat, to my taste, although I understand many wouldn't agree. I do hate to waste a good tin, and find them much more appetizing than a jar, especially now while they are still adorned with art.

I think it mostly depends on the humidity. Recently I found an open tin of royal yacht that I misplaced about a year ago. I thought it would crumble into dust but it still has perfect moisture level for smoking, and only slightly less flavorful. The humidity where I live is usually between 70-85%.
