Vivian Azer, an analyst with the Cowen Group, said that tobacco companies are currently in a strong position. In the US, “tobacco profits have accelerated for three consecutive years,” she said. She attributes that primarily to the ability of tobacco companies to raise prices in order to compensate for a diminishing number of customers.

Sorry for linking to Pravda On The Potomac, but this article is great. They are squeezing blood from a stone.
Sensible policy is to deregulate and let small companies take business. But big egalitarian government cannot handle that, as there is no excuse for power/graft.
Hope you guys are handloading 30-06 rounds too.

It's a rational strategy for big tobacco, given the rules of the game as they stand. Sad, as its suppressing innovation and consumer choice.
